Department of Homeland Security vows to enforce Donald Trump's travel bans, despite court order

Donald Trump's travel bans will continue to be enforced by the The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), despite a New York judge placing a temporary stay on it being executed.

But the DHS said it would "continue to enforce all of President Trump's Executive Orders in a manner that ensures the safety and security of the American people."
It said: "President Trump's Executive Orders remain in place - prohibited travel will remain prohibited, and the US government retains its right to revoke visas at any time if required for national security or public safety."
White House officials also insisted there was nothing in the court order which impeded the executive order and it remained in full effect.

Editing to add this comment because I just read the full text of that DHS press release, which you can find here:
https://www.dhs.gov/news/2017/01/29/department-homeland-security-response-recent-litigation
It's four paragraphs long, starting by saying they'll continue to enfore Trump's orders.
But the last, single-sentence paragraph does include four words that say they'll "comply with judicial orders."
As I've seen pointed out on Twitter, this is doublespeak, buried and contradicted by the rest of the statement.
The statement seems designed to confuse both DHS employees and the media.
Especially with WH officials saying that nothing in the court order impedes the executive order.
And if DHS employees themselves aren't sure what they're supposed to do, their actions will help the Trump Team find out which employees to view as loyalists, and which are apparently disloyal to the wannabe dictator.

(3,040 posts)Trump's administration, and the executive branch as a whole, will not follow any orders from the courts. It is just another step towards becoming a facist dictatorship.

Later it quotes vague "white house officials." Which ones? The ones who mop the floors?

I've seen 3 court orders -- Brooklyn, New York, Virginia, and Seattle Washington -- and all of them stop the deportations, but none of them say anything about the detentions. So as far as I know, the deportations have stopped, but the detentions continue, except as the DHS sees fit on a case-by-case basis -- there have been a few releases, but not as the result of any court order, no court order says anything about releases... that I've seen.
But it's certainly a step in the right direction.
And well, I haven't read Trump's executive order recently, but I assume it calls for sending people back to their home country (or deporting them if they don't return home voluntarily), so having them being detained rather than sent back is, like some headlines say, blocking PART of his order.
