Trump picks Colo. appeals court judge Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court

Source: Wash Post

President Trump selected Colorado federal appeals court judge Neil Gorsuch as his Supreme Court nominee on Tuesday, opting in the most important decision of his young presidency for a highly credentialed favorite of the conservative legal establishment to fill the opening created last year by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Gorsuch prevailed over the other finalist, Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, also a federal appeals court judge, and Trump announced the nomination at a televised prime-time event at the White House.

Trump broke tradition by entering the White House ceremony by himself, rather than alongside his nominee. He declared that after the most transparent judicial selection process in history, he had delivered on a campaign promise to find the very best judge in America for the court.

Gorsuch, 49, said he would strive to be independent and impartial, and that he would follow the law to its rightful outcome. A judge who personally agrees with the outcome of every case, Gorsuch said, is probably a bad judge.

Gorsuch and Hardiman, 51, emerged from a list of 21 as Trumps most likely choices. A third person on the shortlist U.S. Circuit Judge William H. Pryor Jr. of Alabama saw his chances diminish as some Senate Republican leaders have said his confirmation would be difficult.

No real surprise, but Gorsuch is a hard core asshole.

And Trump changes the subject from his other problems.

Priebus apparently pitched a fit about it.

Reeked of a cross between The Apprentice (YOU--you're fired!! And YOU--you're hired!!!) and The Bachelor (....and the last rose goes to.....) and Miss Universe (Gorsuch fluttering down the hallway with a crown on his head, clutching several dozen roses and being be-sashed by the runner-up....)

Apparently there was a LOT of pushback at his attempt to "reality show" the proceedings.

Also, this guy is YOUNG. If they let him through, we're stuck w/him for awhile. The gray hair is a 'foolya.'

At least the Dems aren't making this easy--I think the protests are having an effect. We need to keep them up:

Other Democrats aren’t likely to take such a bold move. But there were already signs that things won’t be particularly cozy: Trump invited senior Democratic senators to the White House for a reception to meet his Supreme Court pick, but they declined the invitation, according to senior aides.

I bet he helped fix things for Colorado fascist billionaire Phil Anschutz a number of times. That's all trump needed to know.

...because he is accepting the nomination.

Any judge with any integrity, who knows and understands the Constitution, and intends to defend it, would never accept this nomination BECAUSE IT BELONGS TO MERRICK GARLAND! The repubs were DERELICT in their Constitutional obligation to give GARLAND a hearing. And if not approved, to move on to the next one. They violated their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. Any jurist of any stripe would know this and would have discussed it, and if they had any Constitutional integrity, they would oppose the inaction.

THE DEMS, IF THEY HAVE ANY SENSE, WILL HAMMER THIS HOME AT THE HEARINGS.
