Second judge rejects state voter ID law (wis)

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen asked the state Supreme Court to take up both cases earlier this year to get a quick resolution to them, but the court declined. The state's high court is expected to eventually take the cases. Meanwhile, two other challenges to the law have been filed in federal court.

Van Hollen has appealed the ruling in the League of Women Voters case to an appeals court in Madison. That court is not expected to rule until after November, meaning photo IDs will not be required at the polls in the Aug. 14 primary and Nov. 6 election.

A demographer who testified for the state, Peter Morrison, argued virtually all eligible voters had a photo ID, but University of Wisconsin-Madison political scientist Kenneth Mayer estimated more than 301,000 do not have a driver's license or state ID card. That's 9.3% of registered voters.
Flanagan also said the voter ID measure - which backers say will help prevent voter fraud - is "unlikely to protect the electoral process." He said the voter ID law appears to be the most restrictive one in the country.

(53,475 posts)Dear Attorney General JB Van Hollen,
It has recently come to my attention that there is need for concern over your election in 2006. As you may recall you were running against Kathleen Falk, a Democrat and County Executive of Dane County. On the surface the results of that race looked as though you were the winner by a narrow margin of only 8,859 votes. In this election, Waukesha County had voted heavily for you.
Here is the problem, though. The Waukesha County Clerk reports that there were 156,804 ballots cast in that election.
You can see that by going here:
http://www.waukeshacounty.gov/uploadedFiles/Media/List_Documents/County_Clerk/2006_Official_Election_Results/Official_Election_Combined_Summary_Nov20_2006.LST
All seems kosher until you look at the Government Accountability Board Canvass Summary in which over 174,000 votes were cast in that race. You can see this by going here and clicking attorney general:
http://elections.state.wi.us/subcategory.asp?linksubcatid=592 (Note: this second link is no longer functional, but I verified both numbers when I originally posted this in April of 2011. Shoulda taken a screenshot.)
Therefore it is clear more votes were cast in this race than ballots cast.
I am told you are a reasonable man. The numbers dont add up and given the extremely high percentage of votes for you in that county Kathleen Falk would be the winner if the numbers added up.
I am requesting that you do the right thing and resign from office effective immediately. We have now proven you are not the legitimate winner of that election and therefore are unable to be considered our Attorney General.
I am not alleging you had a part in this, but now that you know, the FACT remains you are not our legally elected Attorney General. Please do the right thing and resign, you can even run again and get legally elected if you would like. Thank you for your time and consideration, may you make the right decision and not the right wing one.
Sincerely,Jeremy Ryan
