Far from idle speculation: Dem. senator says looming impeachment is reason to filibuster Gorsuc

Source: raw story

..........................

...............“I am still angry about the treatment of [President Barack Obama’s nominee] Merrick Garland,” Blumenthal noted. “My Republican colleagues have said if the shoe were on the other foot, we would have done the same. It would have been as wrong if we had [refused to give Garland a hearing] as it was when they did.”

“But my vote is not about Merrick Garland,” he continued. “It is about Neil Gorsuch and it is about the constitutional crisis that may well be looming as a potential threat to our democracy.”

Blumenthal pointed out that FBI Director James Comey has testified that the agency is investigating ties between President Trump’s associates and the Russian interference in the U.S. elections.

“The independence of our judicial branch has never been more threatened or more important,” the senator declared, citing impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon. “The possibility of a Supreme Court needing to enforce a subpoena against the president of the United States is far from idle speculation. It has happened before in United States vs. Nixon.”

If a SCOTUS shouldn't be confirmed in last year of term, it definitely shouldn't happen when threat of impeachment/treason looms.

"Never reward bad behavior!"

By today's "Republican rules" Merrick Garland should be a justice.

As far as Republicans never impeaching one of their own?

'They may not impeach, but they will tell him to get out while the getting out is good!

Looming impeachment is reason for Dems to block every single piece of legislation this illegitimate administration tries to pass or every single candidate they try to get confirmed.

Having said that, "never under estimate the power of the court of public opinion." IMHO this scandal will continue to grow, one that will be larger than the sum of its parts, and almost already is! As public distaste for he and his ilk, even the GOP will be unable to ignore or continue to sit on their guilty hands

One reason is that they don't consider Trump one of their own.

Another reason is that once they get their primary objective (tax bill, Gorsuch), they can breathe a sigh of relief and not feel compelled to support him any longer, since they would have one of their own (Pence) to take over.

Another reason is that some of the Republicans really do regard the Russian connections as very serious and have stated that America's democracy is at risk, and although it was the Democrats who got hit this time, next time it could be the Republicans.

I also think they MAY, just may, consider him a liability at some point. If he has no credibility except with his decreasing base, they may have no reason to keep him around as a figure head.

These are just possibilities. And I don't know how many would follow these reasons. But I do think that some will, maybe more than a lot of people would think. AFTER they get their tax bill and Gorsuch seated. I'd say the health bill, too, but not sure they care about that, except to repeal the ACA.

The traditional party leaders never liked Trump and always saw him as an outsider who hijacked their primary process and their message in a way that undermined a lot of generational planning. I think they were ready to suck it up and lock arms behind him if necessary but now that he's proven to be a gigantic #FAILURE the knives are being sharpened. It's still very unclear how things will go down, but it's increasingly hard to believe Trump will serve a full term or even a full year without a serious challenge from his own party.

So many of Trump's nominees and inner circle have known ties to Putin and his cronies, it makes me wonder about the rest of them.

Maybe Gorsuch is clean, but I don't think Trump's handlers would let him nominate anyone whom they couldn't use eventually

If there is, and if he gets seated on the court, and if there is then eventually a big FBI roundup of all the conspirators, and Gosuck is one of them, and if he goes to jail, then does he get disbarred? Does he lose the SCOTUS job? What if he gets an executive pardon?

However, it seems unlikely. I'm not sure the Russians would have had much use for a judge. He does look like the kind of guy somebody might have blackmail material on, but I just don't see why they would bother.

I don't know about impeachment but I do suspect the FBI to be bring charges somewhere along the line. Trump may be forced to resign, which would achieve the same desired result.
