FBI Creates Unit to Coordinate Trump-Russia Probe
Source: Financial Times via Political Wire
The FBI is planning to create a special section based at its Washington headquarters to co-ordinate its investigation of Russian activities designed to influence the 2016 presidential election, the Financial Times reports.
The move, a sign of how seriously the bureau is taking allegations of Russian meddling in American politics, is also aimed at giving FBI director James Comey greater visibility into the investigations granular details.
Said one FBI agent: Its meant to surge resources.

(23,097 posts)He and his administration are the most danger to our nation in or history. They are worse than the slave owners 1%ers who drug us into a Civil War. Worse because he will destroy the whole world's economy and create wars and unrest everywhere. He tells Assad, he's safe from us, and the next day he uses chemical weapons on his own people. Then orange assface doesn't even mention Assad, just rips Obama. How stupid and low class can one person be? Anyone who doesn't purely hate Obama because he's black, knows that after 60+ days in office, and giving Assad the signal that it's OK, drumpf totally owns these deaths and will never ever take responsibility for anything, much less this. Tillerson is the biggest joke of a SOS ever. Everyone in drumpfs cabinet is a criminal and on the take to Russia or he wouldn't have hired them.
I just can't stand it!!

(64 posts)... he had knowledge of the Russian influence for a while before the election and two weeks before came up with BS about additional Clinton emails which probably swung the election to Trump. The only thing that gives me some bit of confidence is that nobody knows what everyone else knows. The Obama Administration sent out information about he Russian influence in the last weeks like seeds to multiple agencies. So Comey has to be careful that anything he knows that puts Trump in a bad light has to assume others also know and can't (hopefully) withhold information. No matter what happens Comey is a sleazeball.

(562 posts)Rant coming...
Seriously, FFS they're just NOW creating a "special section" so Comey can know more about the details? As a sign of how serious they are? Can they at least subpoena his fucking tax return? Can Comey confirm that?
Steele handed the FBI a roadmap on a silver platter. Naming names, dates, etc. Comey just acknowledged they're now using it as a road map last week. It took one guy (Steele) only 6 months to put that 35 page Dossier together. It took the FBI 9 months to put a special section together. Replace Comey with Steele he'll finish it in a month. Just a hunch. One is motivated. The other wants to minimize harm to his party.
Trump just gave a pass to Assad who happens to be Russia's strongest military ally in the middle east since the 70's. He's still using Russian fed propaganda to muck up the investigation. Tillerson was ready to skip the NATO meeting. There's effectively no dept. of state. He's given Kushner, a likely accomplice in collusion, broad power to do God knows what. He's got major business conflicts exposed and unknown that noone's touched.
We have to try to win back the house. Being the minority party is an almost powerless position.

(49,001 posts)This is a complex affair and there is an awful lot of detail. The businessmen (almost exclusively men, except perhaps Ivanka and Rebekka Mercer) have years of experience hiding stuff via shell companies, numbered companies, couriers, go-betweens, etc.
This is bigger than Watergate and that took two years. Watergate did not have international players. Watergate did not have digital media as a powerful force (social media) and enabling technology (email, electronic bank transfers). Watergate was limited to about two dozen people. This has national election committees involved, international couriers, shadowy hackers, Wikileaks, and on and on.
It's a dangerous fantasy to want this wrapped up in one month.

(562 posts)First, you're cherry picking my remark about one month. The point is it took Steele 6 months to build a detailed roadmap, naming the major players, the strategies used, the detailed collusion.
I understand the Russian arena is Steele's specialty, and the FBI is a domestic agency, so he has contacts they don't (not sure what the CIA is doing...?).
Unlike Watergate, the FBI started with a detailed roadmap. Yes this is more complicated, but we also have far more sophisticated surveillance techniques. Unlike Nixon, Trump had many of the main actors working on his campaign and now in his cabinet. He has blatantly obvious evidence like his tax returns that provide a lot more names.
Its massive scale, and number of parties, could arguably make it easier to find a smoking gun, not harder. Especially with Trump's mouth, Flynn's mouth, Page's mouth, Stone's mouth.
I don't know why you'd assume a need to prosecute all players. Trump is the one with executive power. He's the target. The rest are Scooter Libbys. In Benghazi, they were aiming for Clinton, not Susan Rice, etc.
Speaking of, compare it to the Benghazi timeline.
The incident occurred 9/12/12. The FBI opened their investigation the NEXT DAY with FBI agents sent to the site by 9/21,
Here, Comey had the Dossier in October, 2016, but ignored it until December. He didn't announce a formal investigation until 2 weeks ago.
Now, he just created a special FBI section. It's April. Since its massive, why didn't he do that months ago, with democracy at stake. The "special section" is still only 20 agents. Why limit it to just 20 agents, when the congress is either obstructing or moving at snail pace.
Speaking of congress, by 1/13, only 4 months after the Benghazi incident, after house and senate congressional committees had ALREADY forced all major players to testify, Clinton was testifying. Of course, then the house created a house select committee to further investigate, and force her to testify again for 3 days, and the FBI kept it, and the stupid email server criminal investigation open (or reopened) right up to the election.
Meanwhile, no party has yet testified
in either congressional hearing yet. That's not the FBI's fault.
Bottom line - this investigation should be the FBI's highest priority. National security and democracy is at risk. Comey should be devoting massive resources to it. That's still not happening. Again, he just today created a special section FFS with 20 agents. Any other FBI investigation pales in comparison.

(15,286 posts)There are a lot of threads to pull and unwind. The fact that the FBI is now consolidating its investigation enabling it to pull whatever resources it needs shows the FBI has already uncovered a lot of possible wrong-doing.
