Alabama governor faces impeachment hearings after court ruling
Source: CBS News
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley will face impeachment hearings beginning Monday after the state Supreme Court gave lawmakers the green light to move ahead with an effort to oust the governor, who is fighting to stay in office amid fallout from an affair with a top aide.
The Alabama Supreme Court on Saturday reversed a short-lived victory for Bentley, a Republican. A judge on Friday blocked impeachment proceedings. After the high courts ruling, the House Judiciary Committee quickly announced plans to proceed with hearings on Monday.
Bentley, a 74-year-old dermatologist and former Baptist deacon, has been engulfed in a sex scandal since recordings surfaced in 2016 of him making suggestive remarks to a female aide before he and his wife of 50 years got divorced.
Bentley has vowed to stay in office despite growing calls for his resignation. He stood on the marble steps of the state Capitol on Friday and somberly admitted making personal mistakes but maintained he did nothing to merit his removal from office.

(60,010 posts)I wonder how his scraggly face and bald head will appeal to her when he is no longer gov?
Down here, what he has done...keeping as mistress the wife of a man who worked for him, cheating on his wife, lying about it when twice confronted by concerned members of his church ( he was then kicked out of the church), ..doing all that is a BIG deal in this state.
and he is still seen with her, altho attempting to keep it on the down low.

(5,810 posts)The expressions on her face and barely contained glee were fun to watch. Usually she is tackling such complex political issues, but this story is as old as mankind and not too difficult to unwind. So in light of all the high level spy stories and treachery going on in the world of politics, it was a nice change of pace to have a story familiar to us all. And yep, getting removed as a Deacon and getting kicked out of his church here in the south really is a big, hairy deal!

(26,291 posts)for cheating on his wife but that usually isnt grounds for being impeached from office and in fact for many Repugnant politicians it seems like a badge of honor that they wear for how often they cheat on their spouse and then trade them in for another model.
