Tillerson: Election Meddling Something 'Russia Needs To Confront Themselves'

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Sunday suggested that in order to deter further electoral meddling, Russia "needs to confront" its own interference in the 2016 U.S. election as well as upcoming elections in Europe.
"This is something that Russia needs to confront themselves and I think examine carefully as to how this is helping them achieve their longer-term objectives," Tillerson said on ABC's "This Week."
He said the U.S. will "continue to talk with" Russian officials "about how this undermines any hope of improving relations not just with the United States," but suggested self-reflection will be a stronger deterrent than external pressure.
"It's pretty evident that they are taking similar tactics into electoral processes throughout Europe and so they're really undermining any hope for improved relations with many European countries as well," Tillerson said.

deplorable. treasonous.

(23,099 posts)Just because 62 million are total morons, doesnt mean that the majority of us are that stupid. This is a totally ignorant and self-serviing statement. No, don't look at how we colluded with Russia illegally to put Hair Furor in office, no just look for them to change their ways out of the goodness of their hearts. And their position with NATO isn't about starting wars, no, who would think something like that of our dear friend Vlad? OH, and Ukraine, well, isn't it Russian anyway? So what if they conquer it with their militiary, it's really what they wanted all along, deep in their Russian hearts.
How stupid our SOS and POTUS are and even worse, they think we are more stupid than them.
We have to keep calling these stupid people out every time they say this stuff.
If we don't then they just assume it's another thing they got away with.
Tillerson is trying to spin this into something an entire country did, but we know it's Putin who did it.
We know the Republicans colluded with Putin, and we know they broke the law and probably committed treason.
The FBI seems to be taking their time for whatever reason, but I believe they have the proof in their hands.
It's only a matter of time before it all comes out.
Tillerson can have his wish and go back to retirement - or jail.

Tillerson sounds more and more like Rand Paul
Russia, Soviets, Putin never respect weakness. Study the post WWII period.
We wanted free reign for our companies in eastern Europe, Soviet Union wanted
the exact opposite and they had conquered the territory during the war but were
cold broke and needed US capital ($$$). Spheres of influence settled the day. It was
the beginnings of the Cold War and neither side rolled over.

(1,846 posts)It sounds to me like he's saying everyone knows what they are up to...they should consider that now that the jig is up, continued meddling will not improve their relationship with the west.
From my perspective, his message is if you ever want sanctions removed so you can get at that oil ("longer term objectives" , stay the hell out of western politics...
If that's the message, I'm OK with that.
I don't see him as a player in the Trump / Russia scandal. I think he is speaking CEO to CEO (Putin).
Just a thought.
Blue_Roses
(12,894 posts)that doesn't require so much diplomacy. As CEO, he could say and get what he wants. As SoS, not so much.SoS is a position of service to others.
He has no business being in that position, but it seems obvious he doesn't really want it either.

(90,677 posts)...and expected answers. If he ever spoke publicly at all (if shareholder meetings count as public) it would have been from well-prepared written remarks, no questions after. The employees in the Exxon building were all peons to one degree or another, in his eyes; if his behavior in State is any indication, he spent all his time in his office going over papers, meeting only with his near-equals, and never acknowledging the presence of other employees in the halls or elevators.
Tillerson knows one thing and he knows it well. Those skills and behaviors have not translated well to his new job.
The oft-repeated GOP mantra that government should be run like a business is entirely the wrong paradigm, but how many Americans will finally learn that lesson?

As for Russia, Drillerson seems to be hinting that the U.S. can simply let down it's guard in hopes that Russia will come around and do what's best. And as far as any past "misdeeds" go, it was all Russia's doing with no complicity on OUR part. It's all on THEM.

This from a guy whose main priority these days is getting a good nap! Doesn't even feel like taking questions from reporters much less bringing them along with him to cover his comings 'n' goings. And CLEARLY didn't bother to do much study or preparation for the job. Laziest SOB I've ever seen in "action" on the public's nickel! Is that how he ran Exxon, too?
