Danforth, other top Republicans push Hawley to seek U.S. Senate over Wagner

Source: STL Post Dispatch

A group of prominent GOP luminaries has issued a formal call for Josh Hawley, Missouri's new firebrand conservative attorney general, to run for the U.S. Senate next year — an apparent slight to U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner, the establishment Republican who was slow to get fully behind President Donald Trump's campaign last year.

“This letter is to urge you to become a candidate for the United States Senate in 2018,” states a public letter to Hawley, dated Monday and signed by former U.S. Sen. John Danforth, former Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and other prominent Missouri Republicans. “[W]e are convinced you would be the strongest candidate for Missouri's Senate seat.”

That seat is currently held by Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, who the letter claims has been “pressed hard by the left wing of her party” to contribute to the “dysfunction” of the Senate in opposing Trump “at every turn.”

In a statement issued Monday, Hawley said: “I am working very hard at the job people elected me to do. It is far too early to be thinking about any future election with so much pressing work to do.”

"Hill was ripped apart by the Judiciary Committee during her testimony, specifically its GOP members. She had her private sex life framed as suspect — Sen. John Danforth suggested Hill might have “erotomania,” a condition where an individual harbors a delusion that someone more powerful is in love with her."
