GOP Intelligence chairman troubled by Trump's firing of FBI director

Source: The Hill

05/09/17 08:07 PM EDT
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said Tuesday he is “troubled by the timing and reasoning” of President Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey.

“In my interactions with the director and with the bureau under his leadership, he and the FBI have always been straightforward with our committee,” Burr said. “Director Comey has been more forthcoming with information than any FBI director I can recall in my tenure on the congressional intelligence committees.”

Burr’s statement, along with statements of concerns Tuesday evening by two other Republican chairmen, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), raises pressure on Republicans to endorse the appointment of a special prosecutor or the creation of an independent committee to examine Russia’s influence on domestic politics.

3. Doesn't Trump know that the firing of Comey would look very suspicious to the public?

to point out all the Democrats who have shown a lack of faith in Comey's integrity. I could easily see some pundit thinking themselves clever by saying "The only think everyone in DC agrees on is that Comey can't be trusted." or something to that effect.

Senator Burr,

I too find the firing of Director Comey troubling. I have no faith that President Trump will nominate a new Director who will continue an honest and independent inquiry of Russia's actions during our last election.

At this time I see no other option other then engaging an Independent Prosecutor to complete the ongoing investigation. It is time for all of us to put aside our political beliefs and loyalties, and do what is right and needed for the good on the country as a whole.

As your constituent I am asking for you as my Senator and as the Chairman of the Intelligence Committee to show leadership and move our country in the right direction.
