Karl Rove: Romney Blew It In London (“You have to shake your head.")

Source: Talking Points Memo

On Fox News Friday, Rove became the latest to share in the collective astonishment:

“You have to shake your head. Gov. Romney went to the London Olympics at invitation of the International Olympic Committee. It was a great opportunity for him to talk about his experiences, look, he stepped away from the leadership of Bain Capital for three years in order to step in and save the floundering Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002. I bet there is lots of stories he could be talking about what a wonderful experience that was and how uplifting and inspiring it was. Instead he got stuck making a, somehow or another that the comments the Brits took as insult, and walked it back pretty quickly and walked it back adroitly but nonetheless the damage was done."

Short story: Mitt won on LIES, LIES and MORE LIES aided significantly by MONEY, MONEY and MORE MONEY

That formula worked SO GOOD for him, he naturally thought it would work this time around to. He's just finding out that things have changed a little since 2003 and that we've wised up to his style of dirty tricks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitt_romney

In 2002, Republican Acting Governor Jane Swift's administration was plagued by political missteps and personal scandals.[146] Many Republicans viewed her as a liability and considered her unable to win a general election.[150] Prominent party figures – as well as the White House – wanted Romney to run for governor,[148][151] and the opportunity appealed to him for its national visibility.[152] One poll taken at that time showed Republicans favoring Romney over Swift by more than 50 percentage points.[153] On March 19, 2002, Swift announced she would not seek her party's nomination, and hours later Romney declared his candidacy,[153] for which he would face no opposition in the primary.[154] In June 2002, Massachusetts Democratic Party officials contested Romney's eligibility to run for governor, citing residency issues involving his time in Utah for the Olympics.[155] That same month, the bipartisan Massachusetts State Ballot Law Commission unanimously ruled that he was an eligible candidate.[156]

He again ran as a political outsider.[146] He played down his party affiliation,[149] saying he was "not a partisan Republican" but rather a "moderate" with "progressive" views.[157] He touted his private sector experience as qualifying him for addressing the state's fiscal problems[154] and stressed his ability to obtain federal funds for the state, giving his Olympics record as evidence.[139][141][158] He proposed to reorganize the state government while eliminating waste, fraud, and mismanagement.[149][159] The campaign was the first to use microtargeting techniques, in which fine-grained groups of voters were reached with narrowly tailored messaging.[160]

To overcome the image that had damaged him in the 1994 Senate race – that of a wealthy corporate buyout specialist out of touch with the needs of regular people – a series of "work days" were staged throughout the campaign, in which Romney performed blue-collar jobs such as herding cows and baling hay, unloading a fishing boat, and hauling garbage.[159][161][162] Television ads highlighting the effort, as well as one portraying his family in gushing terms and showing him shirtless,[161] received a poor public response and contributed to his being behind his Democratic opponent, Massachusetts State Treasurer Shannon O'Brien, in polls as late as mid-October.[159][162] He rebounded with ads that accused O'Brien of being a failed watchdog for state pension fund losses in the stock market and that associated her husband, a former lobbyist, with the Enron scandal.[149][162] During the election he contributed over $6 million – a state record at the time – to the nearly $10 million raised for his campaign overall.[163][164] Romney was elected governor on November 5, 2002, with 50 percent of the vote to O'Brien's 45 percent.[165]

Based on Romney's history, it is a pretty good guess that Romney believes that all he needs to win the presidency is just one really good smear ad, strategically timed and targeted in a multi-hundred-million dollar media blitz. Sadly, given the American electorate, it is not outside the realm of possibility that such a low-life dishonest tactic might work.

'something' will happen, Romney will be dumped, and some other candidate (who'll be fresh and new) will emerge. He will be latched onto by all the dumb RWers, who really don't like Romney and will be full of enthusiasm if he is removed. That is the worst-case scenario for Obama, IMHO. The pubs can crow that their convention "worked" and the best man for the job was picked by popular vote at the convention. RWers will be newly infused with joy at getting rid of Romney, and will all get out and vote.

Suddenly switching candidates will put off a huge "You vile peasants will goddamned well vote for who we tell you to vote for!" vibe, and seriously piss off all the people that supported Romney. I think it would cost them more to do that than to write off this election and hope for a win in 2016.
