Legislature overrides Brownbacks veto of bill that rolls back his 2012 tax cuts

Source: Kansas City Star

TOPEKA
The Republican dominated Kansas Legislature that has soured on Gov. Sam Brownback’s vision for the state voted late Tuesday to roll back the governor’s signature tax cuts.

Lawmakers voted to override Brownback’s veto of a tax plan estimated to bring the state more than $1.2 billion over a two-year span.

The Senate vote was 27 to 13, and the House followed by agreeing 88 to 31 to supersede the Republican governor’s wishes on the tax plan and force the changes into law.

All sorts of one-time accounting gimmicks and money shifts, very much like payday loans to pay off credit card debt one more time.

Kansas is in deep Trump money-wise. They'll essentially have to shut the state down if they continue the Brownback doctrine. But this is the vision the GOP has for the entire country. This was supposed to be the grand example of what the GOP could do nationwide. I'm glad they didn't continue Brownback's ridiculous policies just to prop up a failed, and very harmful, policy the GOP wanted to roll-out on America. The people of Kansas deserve better than what they're getting from Sam, but they keep voting for highly flawed GOP candidates. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Sometime the people of Kansas are going to have to experiment a little with their voting choices. The GOP is never going to bring Kansas out of mediocrity.

and replaced them with more moderate Rs the last time they voted for state legislators. That's why the legislature was able to repeal the tax cuts.

Though I don't think when Brownback came up with his plan, he was thinking about people like me, but if we can actually use the increased revenue for good - schools, infrastructure, etc. I'll pay them with a grin.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas legislators have repudiated the tax-cutting experiment that brought Gov. Sam Brownback national attention, with even fellow Republicans voting to override his veto of a plan reversing many of the income tax reductions he's championed in recent years as a way to fix the cash-strapped state's budget.

The conservative Republican governor still touts the income tax cuts enacted in 2012 and 2013 as pro-growth policies. But voters soured last year on the governor's policies, ousting two dozen of his allies from the Legislature and giving more power to Democrats and moderate Republicans who then backed this year's tax increase.

The Legislature's action leaves his main political legacy in tatters.

"He believes — still believes — in this, and that's OK. I don't," said Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning, a conservative Kansas City-area Republican who supported the first round of tax cuts in 2012 but voted to override the veto. "I've made many, many bad decisions in my business career, as many bad as good, but I've always backed up and mopped up my mess. That's what I'm doing now."
