Poliquin: The state should take control of national monument land
Source: Bangor Daily News
The state should take control of Maines national monument regardless of whether President Donald Trump rescinds the executive order that created it, U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin said Tuesday.
Poliquin responded to a request from U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke with a three-page letter reiterating his opposition to the controversial Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
Poliquin did not recommend reversing President Barack Obamas executive order creating the monument in August 2016, but he did say that Mainers would be the best managers of the 87,562 acres the family of Burts Bees entrepreneur Roxanne Quimby gave to the nation.
Maine knows best how to manage its land and abundant natural resources, Poliquin, R-Maine, wrote. Whatever the president decides regarding the national monument, I respectfully request the state be responsible for managing the land and its many uses not Washington.

(4,112 posts)Many counties joined the American Land Council whose soul goal is the 'transfer' (translation: steal, theft) of national lands, including the beautiful US Forests from the entire 50 states to our one poor state. New Mexico is the only state in the nation whose state land commissioner has absolutely NO oversight from the governor, legislation or anyone, per our state Constitution which is almost impossible to change, I found out. One of our county commissioners actually said that these national lands already belong to our state and county and 'courted' a lawsuit which the county commission believes we can win at the US Supreme Court level, costs be damned.
States who can't fight the multi-million dollar fires will do what to pay for that fire fighting? Mmmm, lease or sell to oil & natural gas interests, lease or sell to huge hunting preserves like the one Scalia was at when he died or like the one Cheney was at when he showed such ignorance of actual hunting 'rules.'
That's why I ran for office last year. DU provided much support then and I'm hoping they do again, not just for me but for every DUer who steps up to the plate and runs next election cycle....PLEASE CONSIDER RUNNING EVEN IF IT IS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE and something you never dreamed of doing. I am a retired accountant, then behavioral health administrator when my late husband (who lost both legs in Vietnam) committed suicide and our son was in prison 1 year after that for 'self medicating'.
