Montana’s future Rep. Greg Gianforte filed for an extension for his court appearance date after he was charged with a misdemeanor for assaulting a journalist last month.

Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault after an audio recording from Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs showed Gianforte allegedly grabbed Jacobs and threw him to the ground before telling the reporter to “Get the hell out.”

According to a court document, “the parties are currently exploring a settlement” of the case and that the extension was not opposed by the state, the Missoulian reported Tuesday. Gianforte faced a Wednesday deadline to face the charges. Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert said the court is looking to set a new date.

The assault charges could lead to Gianforte spending as much as six months in jail and a $500 fine.

But I'm sure they'll make him an offer he can't refuse. It would be hard to turn down a lot of money.

6. It would be excellent if some foundation could give Ben Jacobs a reward NOT to settle,

however, it's more than likely this would put the reporter at the top of a right-wing murderous haters' hit list.

On edit:

Actually, if he doesn't settle, he'll probably become their target, anyway. They are completely filthy people.

Jacobs is not part of these settlement discussions. The parties here are the state and the Congressman. The state and the defendant are looking to settle the case.

AG Jeff Sessions wants all prosecutors to seek the highest possible charges and then ensure the highest possible mandatory sentences.

I guess Gianforte doesn't support that idea at the moment, but will when it comes to other cases

Gianforte pays $50,000 to press group to settle assault of Guardian reporter

Congressman-elect issues lengthy apology to Ben Jacobs
over ‘unprofessional, unacceptable, and unlawful’ actions

Greg Gianforte, the Montana Republican who assaulted a Guardian journalist on the eve of his election to the US House of Representatives, has issued a full and unequivocal apology to the reporter and agreed to donate $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The congressman-elect apologized to the reporter, Ben Jacobs, in a letter received late on Wednesday as part of an agreement that settles any potential civil claims.

“My physical response to your legitimate question was unprofessional, unacceptable, and unlawful,” Gianforte wrote. “As both a candidate for office and a public official, I should be held to a high standard in my interactions with the press and the public. My treatment of you did not meet that standard.”

Gianforte said the $50,000 donation to the CPJ, an independent not-for-profit organization that promotes press freedom and that protects the rights of journalists worldwide, was made “in the hope that perhaps some good can come of these events”. He added: “I made a mistake and humbly ask for your forgiveness.”

Gianforte still faces criminal charges over the altercation. ...
