The Republican National Committee on Wednesday tried to spin fired FBI Director James Comeys prepared remarks for Thursdays hearing, arguing that they simply prove the President right.
President Trump was right, RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said in a statement. Director Comeys statement reconfirmed what the president has been saying all along he was never under investigation.
The official GOP Twitter account, in apparent selective contradiction, tried to dismiss the entire statement as a nothingburger.

According to Comeys prepared opening statement, released early by the Senate Intelligence Committee, the ousted FBI director will testify that he told Trump on three different occasions that he was not personally targeted by the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Comey will also testify that Trump asked him to pledge his loyalty and drop the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Trump and the White House have denied both allegations.

(869 posts)Comey was being pushed to stop the investigation. That is bad news.
Comey was asked for his loyality. He responded poorly with that "truthfully loyal" statement.
Comey confirms he told Trump he was not under investigation. But he refused to have the FBI go on a public bandwagon, because if this fact changed, he'd have to let the public know. The question is: Did he foresee a possible change? Did he think that thought Trump currently is not under investigation, that might, or is likely to, change?
The last point is something the IC might want to ask him about.

(9,865 posts)That "truthfully loyal" statement really gives Trump wiggle room which in 24 hours will be vindication.
Very disappointed in Comey. He was not required to say that to Trump. He tried to have it both ways. Not risk his job but also sound independent.
Plus, why did he keep meeting alone if he knows such meetings are not proper?
