Valerie Castile, mother of Philando Castile, spoke with passion in reacting to the not guilty verdicts for officer Jeronimo Yanez on Friday.
7:50pm
St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez has been found not guilty of all counts in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile.
After 27 hours of deliberation spanning five days, the jury of seven men and five women, including two people of color, reached its verdict shortly after 2 p.m. Friday. It was read in court at 2:45 p.m. Castiles family angrily stormed out as soon as the verdicts were read. After the first not guilty verdict was read for the manslaughter charge, defense attorney Earl Gray leaned over and squeezed Yanezs shoulders.
Jurors remained stoic, with little reaction. Ramsey County Attorney John Choi held a news conference to give his reaction, saying he was "disappointed" with the verdicts. Castile supporters were rallying Friday night at the State Capitol in St. Paul
Yanez, 29, was charged in Ramsey County with one count of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm for killing Castile, 32, last July 6 in Falcon Heights. Castiles girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her daughter, then 4, were also in the car at the time. Reynolds livestreamed the aftermath on Facebook, drawing worldwide attention to Castiles death....

Philando Castile Was a Role Model to Hundreds of Kids, Colleagues Say
Melissa Chan
Jul 07, 2016
Colleagues and parents on Thursday remembered Philando Castile as an ambitious man who served as a role model for hundreds of children before he was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in Minnesota.
Castile, who was known by friends as Phil, was a cafeteria supervisor at J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet School in Saint Paul, Minn., where he memorized the names of the 500 children he served every day along with their food allergies, his former coworker said.
He remembered their names. He remembered who couldnt have milk. He knew what they could have to eat and what they couldnt, Joan Edman, a recently retired paraprofessional at the school, told TIME. This was a real guy. He made a real contribution. Yes, black lives matter. But this man mattered.
A police officer shot Castile, 32, late Wednesday during a traffic stop in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights, authorities said. Castiles girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, captured the aftermath of the incident on video and streamed it on Facebook Live, where it went viral...........

(4,425 posts)I followed the trial closely, and the prosecution just didn't present the evidence that would prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. It sucks, because Mr. Castile was by all accounts a good person and would probably be alive today if he had been white.
The other issue that was never addressed in court was the fact that Castile had been pulled over dozens of times for very minor infractions, like the brake light that got him pulled over that night. He was obviously being targeted because of his race. And that sucks too.

After everyone of these killer cop incidents where the murderer is predictably found not guilty, some apologist posts, "oh the jury did the best they could".
Bullshit.
I repeat, that racist jury did a horrible job.
mn9driver
(4,425 posts)But thanks for playing.
brush
(53,776 posts)of these exonerations of killer cops.
Castillo was complying and doing everything right when the cowardly, panicky cop fired seven shots into a car with three people in it and killed him.
No getting around that. How do you fire into a car with innocent people in it like that?
The racist jury ignored all that and found a murderer not guilty because he said he was afraid for his life.
Pure racism exists in the criminal justice system and many of its apologists don't want to admit it.
mn9driver
(4,425 posts)They voted to acquit on the first day. The two holdouts were white.
Your opinion has little to support it.

(53,776 posts)Please. We see this over and over in these cases, and we also see the apologists come to the defense of the racist decisions over and over.

(53,776 posts)will admit that the jury verdict was racist and that our criminal justice system routinely delivers racist verdicts in these killer cop cases.
Even with plain-as-day videos of cops killing black men, how many have there been just over the last two years, dozens perhaps, we still see grand juries refuse to indict and juries refuse to convict.
There's no denying that.
Remember, we all saw the result of the murdering cop's actions in the Catillo case live-streamed on Facebook. We say the blood spreading across Castillo's torso as he died, and we also saw the unwarrented panic on the face of the out of control killer.
Scared cowards don't belong on police forces.
NobodyHere
(2,810 posts)Or are you just trying to ignore anything that doesn't fit your narrative?
brush
(53,776 posts)with the out of control cop panicking as he realized that he had just shot into a car with three innocent people, one being the victim who was complying with his orders.
Guess you didn't see the video.
That murderer couldn't be any more guilty.
NobodyHere
(2,810 posts)Yes we saw the aftermath, but we didn't see the moment of the shooting or what Castillo did or didn't do in the moments prior to the shooting. The jurors decided there wasn't enough evidence to convict.
brush
(53,776 posts)the murdered victim. They went with the cowardly, panicky killer cop who mouthed the standard "I feared for my life" line.
Give us a break.
Apologists for killer cops and racist juries I don't know how they do it.
