HYANNIS, Mass.
The U.S. Coast Guard is responding after a ferry with 48 people aboard hit a jetty off Hyannis.
According to a tweet from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Brant Point, the Friday night incident involved the Steamship Authority fast ferry Iyanough. The ferry began to take on water after the collision, which occurred around 9:45 p.m.
A motor life boat was dispatched by that station, the tweet said.
"Rescue crews are scheduled to work into the night to oversee the safe transfer of all passengers and ferry crew," the Coast Guard wrote in a statement..........................................
That helicopter was seen lowering a rescue basket to the ferry around 11:30 p.m., and hoisting it back up a few moments later.................................

(10,495 posts)This ferry and the Navel destroyer and the cargo ship in Japan? What is going on? All of these have so many redundant methods of collision avoidance, advance warning etc., that it is hard to understand how they could collide. Sure the vessels reaction times are slow but with all of what they have available it should never happen.
