Nevada governor vetoes Medicaid-for-all bill

Source: LA Times

There will be no Medicaid-for-all option in Nevada.

Gov. Brian Sandoval waited until the last day he could — Friday — to veto a measure that would have offered a state-sponsored health insurance option to all residents regardless of income. If he hadn’t signed it or vetoed it by midnight, it would have become law.

If the Republican governor had signed it, Nevada would have become the first state to attempt a Medicaid-for-all approach to health insurance. It also would have placed Nevada among the ranks of states including California that are looking for ways to solidify health insurance options for populations that will be risk if Congress and President Trump gut the Affordable Care Act.

In his three-page veto message released Friday night, Sandoval praised the sponsor of the bill for “creativity” in attempting to design a healthcare option for the state’s 2.9 million people, but he ultimately reasoned that there were too many unanswered questions about how the program would work.

All the insurance mafia has to do is call up images of flustrated white folks having to sit in crowded waiting rooms full of minorities (with crying brown babies for added effect) and ask:

"Is THIS what you want for your family??"

I'm glad they are trying something, but there are a lot of ramifications going forward. So good on them for trying. Maybe Gov should have signed it so it could start working forward or maybe they write another bill. Either way, I feel like it's progress.

Now, if Gov didn't sign due the usual repub objections, that would be to bad. I don't know enough about this Gov to know what his real intentions were.

Hopefully the congress will come back with another bill.

Moderate. Supported Tesla which was good but it violated "Article 8, Section 9 of Nevada's constitution, which forbids giving subsidies to private companies", yet there were complaints that he made it unfavorable to install rooftop solar panels .

"On December 22, 2015, Governor Sandoval's Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, composed of Chairman Paul Thomsen, Commissioner David Noble and Commissioner Alaina Burtenshaw, voted to eliminate the state's net metering policy for rooftop solar. The aftermath of the decision resulted in widespread layoffs in the state and an outpouring of consumer backlash due to the direct penalization of current and future solar customers.[41][42]"

Then Wikipedia says,"Sandoval is widely regarded as a moderate Republican, supporting abortion rights, Obamacare, immigration reform, and renewable energy."

Seems to be on a good bent but he's still caught up in some big money favoritism.

through a state wide program----------------------the republican mantra is "competition" onto a free market------------he just failed. Now everyone has the same old sh*t from the same old players in the insurance industry, that offers sh*t for coverage.

Any retiree in Nevada knows that Medicare costs with out the supplemental costs on average around 150.00 a month with a 80/20 protection plan compared to the 500.00 to 750.00 dollar on that free sh*t market capitalism model with a 70/30 plan, being generated in some business / insurance models.

And to kick the can down the road mentality that he generated in his comments, says a lot, and about his "creativity BS mantra .

and this is the Last Legislative Session that he had control over. What will happen is,California is on the verge of Single Payer, well guess what, all those high paying Green Jobs in and around Reno go back to California from where they came from.

This Guy owes his ass to Adelson,Wynn, and Nevada Energy. Here is another Bill he vetoed. Community Solar Projects, these are Projects built and maintained by HOA's and Small towns and villages.

Got to protect these Fossil Fuel companies, who by the way are drilling like crazy in the Reno and Carson City area.

Sandoval did early on accept the Medicaid expansion for Nevada, and

L.A. Times: "In his (veto) message, the governor said the proposal “does not end the conversation about potential coverage gaps or possible solutions, including Medicaid-like solutions.”

Nevada has about 600,000 people using Medicaid and the Medicaid expansion. About 11% of Nevada residents remain without any healthcare coverage.

“Given the possibility that changes in federal law may put Nevada’s expanded Medicaid population at risk of losing their coverage, the ability for individuals to purchase Medicaid-like plans is something that should be considered in depth,” Sandoval wrote. “If done correctly, the proposals in AB374 could provide a necessary safety net for those who may no longer have access to traditional Medicaid.”

http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-nevada-medicaid-2017-story.html

It'll be interesting to keep an eye on Nevada as loss of ACA coverages -- for almost all, not just people who purchase through the exchanges or get Medicaid -- plays out across the country. Being term-limited can also mean he doesn't have to be afraid of retribution from his own party.

it's not Medicaid, it would be a separate program similar to Medicaid. Are they worried about the competition? That the nonprofit public option would be a better price?
