It is nowhere near enough. They should have gotten much, much more--and even then it wouldn't do anything to help them deal with the loss of their son.

1. There is no pricetag for the life of a son or daughter, period.

They received money to make them go away, to silence the outrage that many felt so keenly on the death of Michael Brown and the following invasion of Ferguson by the police in their SWAT tactical gear and freaking tanks.

The money is not to make things right...that can never be done when justice was so roundly mocked in this case...the money is just to make it go away.

Never forget. Darren Wilson emptied his gun, Michael Brown died and justice was silenced with $1.5M years later. To the assholes on the right, they will play this up in their "Blue Lives Matter" rallies as another example of tax payer dollars going to undeserving minorities...in that regard, this money is WORSE than hush money...its a fucking campaign ad, pre-paid.

My blood pressure must be sky rocketing today....I am literally shaking mad and have a pounding headache...

for losing a child. None.

The family will probably donate it all to a charity or set up a scholarship in Michael's name.

That's what most people would do with that type of payoff money.

3. I do not want to give a false impression or defame the family...hope that did not come across wrong.

The family is left with a hole that can't be filled and a life ripped away too soon that can never be restored. Nothing they do with the money is any of my or anyone else's business and never should be...but the opposition, the racist assholes who wrap themselves in "Blue Lives Matter" flags and routinely pontificate about the evils of the state giving money to the undeserving minorities around the country (and the expense of those good, brave WHITE police)...they will use this payment as a weapon. They will use it to further twist the minds of their flocks. They are the ones that my anger boils at today and every day...its time for me to step away for a bit...the news recently has me unhinged and not able to effectively contribute to anything other than rage and that's a bad place to be...

4. I'm guessing 1.5m is pocket change for the city of St. Louis.

But you won't have to pay even that, St. Louis, if you just keep your KKKops on a tighter leash...

6. An insurance company is probably going to make the actual payment

But the city's insurance rates will go up, probably significantly. And that's money the city can't invest in schools, raises, pensions, etc.

Paying for these types of lawsuits is a big deal for cities and municipalities. Residents who live there will be feeling this for years.

5. Is that all it costs these days to murder an innocent POC in lieu of actual justice?

There are those that would consider that progress on some level. It usually costs city's like Ferguson nothing.

Disgraceful!

Lawyers fees, etc.

No amount of money is capable of replacing a child. But that said, what do they really receive?

Too many people making money off this. Correct me if I'm wrong, please, please.

8. Paltry sum ....

For a human life.

I guess black lives only matter so much.

Anyway ...

If thuglicans have their way, people won't be able to sue police departments for damages even if the policeman is proven to be at fault.

So, if you or a loved one is abused/assaulted or at the very worst murdered by a policeman, and even if the evidence is overwhelming that the officer was at fault for the escalation of that situation, you're out of luck. You'll get NO recompense--NADA. You'll just be left paying for medical bills a policeman's beating/assault may have caused, or you'll be left all alone to pay for your loved one's funeral because a police got away with murdering that loved one

A new GOP bill would make it virtually impossible to sue the police.
*****************************************************

Keeping with the Trump administration’s law-and-order rhetoric, Republicans in the House and Senate recently introduced a bill they’re calling the Back the Blue Act of 2017. The Senate bill was introduced by John Cornyn (R-Tex.), and is co-sponsored by 15 senators, all Republicans. The identical House bill was introduced by Ted Poe (R-Tex.), and includes five co-sponsors, also all Republicans. The bill would create new federal crimes, impose federal police over the will of local officials and voters and shield police officers from virtually any civil liability, even in cases of egregious misconduct.

Let’s look first at the new federal crimes. The bill would create new federal crimes for killing, attempting to kill or conspiring to kill a state or local law enforcement officer who works for a police agency that receives federal funding. Because nearly all police agencies receive some sort of federal funding, including most local sheriff’s departments and town police, the bill basically makes it a federal crime to kill, attempt to kill or conspire to kill any police officer (as well as any judge or first responder). The bill would also allow for the federal death penalty in such cases, and it would impose limits on the ability of defendants to file habeas petitions in federal court after they’ve exhausted their appeals.

The legislation would make also it a federal crime to assault any law enforcement officer (again, using the hook of federal funding). An assault resulting in bodily harm would bring a federal mandatory minimum of between two and 10 years in prison, depending on the severity of any injuries to the officer, plus an additional 20-year mandatory minimum if a dangerous weapon was used “during and in relation to the assault.” An assault not resulting in bodily harm would carry a sentence of up to a year in prison.

I'd rather that the man still be alive than this. You just can't put a dollar figure on a persons life IMO

Having said all that I'm happy for the family

for income stream over a lifetime, not to mention pain, suffering, loss of family unit, loss of grandchildren.

An upscale family would have sued for $40 million, and gotten about 1/3 of that.

that (ridiculously) bull charged, head first, at an innocent police officer who was already shooting at him? Totally justifiable right?

chances are the lawyer got at least a third of it though.
Even then, they can with this money get a good start on a better life and maybe do some good for others in the memory of their loved one.
