ABC settles suit over what it had called 'pink slime'

Source: CNN

After three weeks of trial in a South Dakota courtroom, ABC and Beef Products Inc. reached a settlement in a defamation lawsuit over a series of news reports on the meat producer's use of lean, finely textured beef product -- sometimes referred to by its detractors as "pink slime."

"ABC has reached an amicable resolution of its dispute with the makers of 'lean finely textured beef,'" the network said in a statement.

The South Dakota-based BPI sued ABC for more than $1 billion over reports that originally aired in 2012, alleging that the coverage severely hurt its business. In the reports, ABC explained that the product was not unsafe to eat, but that BPI did not label when it was included in its beef.

Dan Webb, an attorney for BPI, told CNNMoney his clients were "extraordinarily pleased to have reached a settlement."

4. So consumers won't know they're buying and eating "pink slime"?

They make pink slime by dosing meat by-products with ammonia gas, a deadly gas that can kill people. Pink slime is banned for human consumption in Canada and the European Union. Its a filler added to ground beef and processed meats, and it is listed as a food additive, as in NOT real food. Its sole purpose is to tip the scale so consumers who think they are buying straight ground beef, and getting less meat and more filler. This is all about the money, and these companies make a higher profit when the mix this crap into ground beef.

I didn't know that gunk was added (oh, I mean that finely-textured meat product), but I noticed that some meat seemed too...liquidy or something.

I don't like to eat out much because of stuff like this. You never know what's in some of the food.

were chock full of pink slime. You know, no discernible texture, just a chewy lump of something vaguely resembling beef.

What worries me about pink slime the most is that while the ammonia gas treatment might kill off bacteria etc... I doubt that it is able to get rid of the pyrogens that noxious bacteria produce. These are compounds that cause elevated temperatures or fevers in animals, hence the name "pyro".

I suppose the pink slime has some nutritive value in terms of protein content, but it is fairly disgusting that it's made of bacteria laden floor scraps. Stuff you might hesitate to feed a dog.

Oh, by the way, the ammonia gas, while toxic, probably doesn't remain in the finished product. But pink slime is disgusting enough anyway.
