Insurers warn Cruz provision will 'skyrocket' premiums for sick people

Source: MSN/The Hill

The two leading health insurer trade groups sent a strongly-worded letter Friday expressing opposition to a controversial conservative provision included in the latest GOP ObamaCare replacement bill.

America's Health Insurance Plans and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association warned that the provision from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) would mean "premiums will skyrocket for people with preexisting conditions" and "millions of more individuals will become uninsured."

The letter expresses opposition to a provision, included in the new GOP repeal bill, that would allow insurers to sell plans that do not meet ObamaCare regulations, including the ban on discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, if they also sold plans that did meet the requirements.

Conservatives argue this move would allow younger, healthier people to buy cheaper plans.

I probably shouldn't say that out loud for fear Republicans might hear it and incorporate it into their next attempt at Obamacare repeal.

price for the death of every person dropped from the GOP so called health care reform. Believe it works out to a 7.5 million dollar price tag in wealth transfer .

and some reasonable amount based somewhat on percentage of income. But the damn GOPERS never touch the reasonable subsidy side of healthcare finance, nor the questionable profits in almost 20% of our economy.

When the price of insurance has excessive increases it lowers the number of people getting useful insurance which increases the price of insurance. Return to the first sentence until no one buys insurance.

Cruz provision in Republican health bill 'unworkable in any form', insurers warn

- Cruz amendment would allow sale of bare-bones insurance policies
- Judgment from insurance duo deals blow to Republican efforts to pass bill

Associated Press in Washington
Saturday 15 July 2017 12.53 EDT

As the Trump administration continued to woo state governors over healthcare reform, two of the US insurance industry’s most powerful organizations said a crucial provision in the Senate Republican healthcare bill, crafted by Ted Cruz and allowing the sale of bare-bones policies, was “unworkable in any form”.

The judgment dealt a considerable blow to party leaders’ efforts to win support for their legislation.

Leaders included the Cruz provision in their second healthcare bill in hopes of winning votes from other hardline conservatives. But moderates have worried the bill will cause people with serious illnesses to lose coverage, while some conservatives say it does not go far enough.

Two of the 52 Republican senators have already said they will oppose the legislation. Majority leader Mitch McConnell cannot lose any others for the legislation to survive a showdown vote expected next week. A 50-50 tied vote, with all Democrats opposing the measure, would be enough for the bill to pass with a vote from Vice-President Mike Pence.

That's the problem with those who say "why make someone pay for coverage they don't need", directed at the young/healthy/non-reproductive. Insurance works when there are large, mixed-risk pools, not cherrypicked small groups. Under such a system many end up with skyrocketing premiums. Plus, anyone is subject to catastrophic illness or injury at which point if they had a bare-bones policy they will regret it.

"We are all in this together" is a concept that seems to elude many.

They'll learn with their first car accident and a $20,000 hospital visit for the smashed in teeth the value of insurance coverage with ACA.

you can play around with zipcodes, ages and INCOMES...with current ACA (Obamacare) laws, young & old within income range pay ZERO for a decent "basic" healthcare insurance plan.
