Ohio judge: Richard Cordray plans to run for Ohio governor

Source: Politico

A justice on the Ohio Supreme Court says a mutual friend has informed him that Consumer Financial Protection Bureau chief Richard Cordray plans to run for governor in 2018, a move that would inject a big Democratic name into a battleground-state campaign — and remove a key Obama administration holdover from a federal agency.

The justice, Bill O'Neill, said the mutual friend called him last Wednesday to ask if he was still considering running for governor himself in 2018, which O'Neill had spoken about in the past. O'Neill told the friend — whom he refused to name — that he would not run if Cordray did. It was clear from the phone call that Cordray will run for governor, O'Neill said.

"He's getting ready to run," O'Neill said in an interview.

To run for governor, according to federal law, Cordray would have to leave the CFPB before completing his term at the independent regulatory agency, which expires in July 2018. Republicans have been yearning to gut the CFPB, which was created under the Obama administration, and have called for Cordray's firing since President Donald Trump took over the reins of the federal government. House Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) has been a particularly harsh critic of Cordray, calling for him to leave the agency at tense congressional hearings.

I'm so sick of Republican rule here. When progressive-leaning people are literally fawning over John Kasich, of all people, for standing up to No. 45, you know people are desperate for real progressive leadership. Cordray totally has my support.
