GOP senator: It is in Trump's 'best interest' to sign Russia sanctions bill

Source: The Hill

BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 07/23/17 11:10 AM EDT

The Senate's third-ranking Republican said on Sunday that President Trump should sign the Russia sanctions bill expected to pass Congress, saying it is in the president's "best interest."

“I think that in the end the administration will come to the conclusion that an overwhelming majority of congress has and that is that we need to sanction Russia for their meddling in the U.S. election. That I think will pass overwhelmingly again in the senate with a veto proof majority," Sen. John Thune (South Dakota) told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday."

“I think it is in his best interest for a lot of reasons to sign it, and I believe he will," he added. Thune's comments come before the House votes on the legislation aimed at limiting the Trump administration's ability to lift sanctions on Russia.

The legislation passed 98-2 in the Senate last month. The White House has expressed trepidations about the legislation, saying it could hinder its diplomatic relationship with Russia. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), who appeared with Thune, said that the Senate would override a Trump veto.

He got that right. Possible evidence of quid pro quo if he doesn't.

Huckabee Sanders:

“The original piece of legislation was poorly written, but we were able to look at the House and Senate,” she continued. “And the administration is happy with the ability to do that, to make the changes that were necessary and we support where the legislation is now.”
