Susan Collins troubled by Trumps threat to eliminate health insurance subsidies
Source: Bangor Daily News
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Sunday morning shes troubled by President Donald Trumps threat to eliminate health insurance subsidies included in the embattled Affordable Care Act.
Collins appeared on NBCs politics talk show Meet the Press and CNNs State of the Union Sunday morning. She was one of three Republican senators to vote against a so-called skinny repeal of President Barack Obamas landmark 2010 health care law Friday, effectively sinking the latest GOP repeal effort in the Senate.
Throwing out the law, also known as Obamacare, has been a top goal of Republicans since it was passed by a Democratic-controlled Congress in 2010. The skinny repeal sought to overturn just certain parts of the law, and it was billed as a short-term measure just to trigger negotiations with the House to develop a more complete replacement for the Affordable Care Act.
But a Congressional Budget Office analysis found it would have left 16 million uninsured if it was ultimately signed into law.

I'm glad that Senator Collins is troubled by this as she should be but all elected Democrats and the majority of citizens have been troubled about this from the get-go.
It's a shame that her feeling about this is the one that counts at this moment. There should be an army of Republican officials that are troubled by this whole assault on the security of the people of this nation.

(128,966 posts)There have been (by my count based on articles) at least 12 GOP governors who have expressed "concern" (at some point during the "repeal" drama in the spring and over the summer) -
Charles Baker of Massachusetts
John Kasich of Ohio
Larry Hogan of Maryland
Phil Scott of Vermont

The problem is because of the optics for the GOP, they have been suppressing the commentary by most of these governors, although Kasich has been the most vocal.

(128,966 posts)specifically with one agenda - "repeal Obamacare". They also had Citizen's United and Koch money to steamroll the election. Republicans had a net gain of 63 seats in the House in 2010 alone. People like the far right Mike Lee primaried the "conservative" (Bob Bennett) for the Senate race in UT based on the teabagger push to repeal. Cruz & Cotton also came in on that bandwagon in subsequent elections in their states' Senate races.
So you are not going to get much support there until we start moving those people out. Democrats have slowly been clawing back, which at least has had some impact on the Senate (due to the narrower margin) since we lost it in 2014.
