WASHINGTON The U.S. military successfully test-launched an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile from California early Wednesday, according to an Air Force spokesman just days after North Koreas second test of an ICBM.
The unarmed Minuteman III missile was launched at 2:10 a.m. PT from Vandenberg Air Force Base, about 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
An Air Force statement said that the test was not a response to recent North Korean actions, but shows that America's nuclear enterprise is "safe, secure, effective and ready to be able to deter, detect and defend against attacks on the United States and its allies."
The ICBM was equipped with a test reentry vehicle, which officials said showed it traveled about 4,200 miles to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

It's so shameful seeing our president engage in dick waving with the North Korean leader.
I guess Obama didn't have to prove anything.

(6,045 posts)And yes they launch ICBMs there on a regular basis along with a ton of other military & civilian rockets. The only reason this launch is getting media coverage is the recent NK launch.

I live in a real quiet area in Washington State, on an Island, in fact. I've noticed the last 2 days an abnormal amount of military aircraft activity. To the south of me, there is Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Trying to be good neighbors, they usually don't fly over our Island airspace. But it seems to be non-stop the last few days. My nephew is a Navy Officer at Whidbey, I'm going to call him and ask "what's up?" Maybe it's routine and nothing, but....

(39,171 posts)I suspect they are preparing for a surge deployment to Korea and Japan. They would be instrumental in war in the region, both offensively and defensively.

(6,045 posts)I was stationed at Vandenberg AFB & they launch ICBMs there on a very regular basis. The only reason this launch is making the news is due to the recent NK launch. Otherwise, they go reported except maybe in the local Lompoc, Ca paper.
