South Carolina gubernatorial candidate says shes proud of the Confederacy

Source: Think Progress

During a candidate forum on Tuesday evening, South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Catherine Templeton (R) said she’s “proud of the Confederacy” and vowed the state’s Confederate monuments would be preserved if she’s elected.

At one point during the forum, a man who identified himself as “a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans” told Templeton that “southern heritage is a very important issue to me.”

“I guess you’ve seen all the monuments being took down in Louisiana and all the anti-southern things going on, and I feel anti-southernism is not a conservative value,” he continued. “I’d like to know your opinion on southern heritage and southern defense.”

He's also an Army veteran... I hope if there's an afterlife he meets up with some former Union soldiers.

We had a population of 31,000,000 in 1860.......
With 620,000 deaths in the war...that comes to

1 in every 52 people were killed fighting this war....Is that something to be proud of????

It was incredible death during those times......
................If something similar were fought today..with today's population of 315,000,000...(give or take a few)

that would be ......6,200,000....deaths...think about that one for a while...

I studied history and taught history in the public schools ...........The civil war was horrendous ..nothing to be proud of ...no words can express the horror of it.

They now proudly state in public and on the record which they would previously only say at their secret meetings under their white hoods and robes.

(If you have never seen civil war pictures..lots of dead bodies, piles of them, etc)

Death and destruction beyond anything ever experienced in this country .Nothing in our history is worse than this......So..here it is 4 hours and 22 minutes of film by Ken Burns....Episode 4 it is called..It is really a combination of episodes. So, If you want to see the death and destruction..watch this. NO..It is not pretty, but it is honest and truthful.

In this episode (number 4 of 7) is the Battle of Gettysburg But this film is not all about Gettysburg. It is the events leading up to and after..many of the events of the war.

.....This will tear your heart out, and this killing and destruction..is nothing to be proud of. Yes, 4 hours and 22 minutes..Yes, I remember seeing the section on the ..."Battle of Gettysburg"... So, on both sides, Confederate and Union .. there is nothing to be proud of..I believe this should be required viewing for everyone to understand this period of history. We have lost our perspective..this was made 28 years ago, and the war was 150 years ago..
No..nothing to be proud of..not this war...Not 620,000 deaths..

because of the way it has been posted on You Tube..this could really be about one third of the entire Civil War series.............

.At about 1:25..to about 1:35 is the story about the Gettysburg Address...with a reading, and some pictures of the dead... ...That section is called, "A New Birth of Freedom"

All episodes available on You Tube..for viewing for all..

Being against the expansion of slavery..was a republican idea...But as we look back, Lincoln's ideas of freedom for all, and equality..would have coincided with our ideas. the ideas of Roosevelt, Johnson, Kennedy, Obama, etc....not what we call the current republican party..

After the civil war, the republican party lead by Johnson and later Grant, reconstructed the South or at least tried to..One would have to read a lot of history to understand the complications and difficulties of "Reconstruction"...It ended in 1877...Gradually many of the gains of reconstruction in the south by the newly freed slaves.. were taken away by a new idea.."separate but equal"..and gradually..over the next 20 years.(around the 1890s) the south returned to a totally segregated and totally unequal place...

.............note...........the above is a severely shortened version of what took place. Get to the library for a whole lot more info on this....

Today's official republican position - Lincoln was our nation's greatest leader

From the 2004 GOP Platform - (I have not seen them change it.)

"One hundred and fifty years ago, Americans who had gathered to
protest the expansion of slavery gave birth to a political Party that
would save the Union - the Republican Party.

In 1860, Abraham Lincoln of Illinois carried the Republican banner
in the Presidential election and was elected the Party's first
President. He became our nation's greatest leader … and one of our
Party's greatest heroes. "

Many of today's republicans, especially Southern Heritage types, do not like the truth.
