Venezuela Troops Take Prosecutor Office as Enemies Targeted

Source: US News

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Security forces surrounded the entrance to Venezuela's chief prosecutor's office Saturday ahead of a session of the newly installed constitutional assembly that is expected to debate removing the onetime loyalist turned arch government critic.

Luisa Ortega denounced what she called a military "siege" on Twitter, publishing photos apparently taken from security cameras showing some 30 national guardsmen in riot gear standing outside her headquarters in Caracas. Access to the downtown block where the building is located was completely restricted amid a heavy troop deployment.

The move comes as members of the all-powerful constitutional assembly pledged to move quickly against President Nicolas Maduro's opponents beginning as early as Saturday, when the body meets for just the second time.

"Don't think we're going to wait weeks, months or years," former Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez said on Friday after she was voted unanimously by all 545 delegates to lead the assembly. "Tomorrow we start to act. The violent fascists, those who wage economic war on the people, those who wage psychological war, justice is coming for you."

... and their minions openly let their hatred for Chavez and his pro people revolution, ie...nationalizing the oil companies, was a known theme.

So just who is it that has brought that country to this impasse? I have not seen any reference to big oil or even the oil industry in Venezuela for ages.

before you come to your conclusions. The nationalization of oil in Venezuela occurred many years before Chavez. Chavez had nothing to do with it.

..."The failed coup in Venezuela was closely tied to senior officials in the US government, The Observer has established. They have long histories in the 'dirty wars' of the 1980s, and links to death squads working in Central America at that time.
Washington's involvement in the turbulent events that briefly removed left-wing leader Hugo Chavez from power last weekend resurrects fears about US ambitions in the hemisphere."

Yes, and so would most Venezuelans also....they seem to want food and medicine available for some reason.
Don't forget Chavez lead his own little failed coup before he came to power.

....because they can't find any food or medicine?
Or because Caracas is the murder capital of the world?
Or because the inflation is over 800%?
Or the suppression of the press and jailing of the opposition?

I know those would keep me agitated with out any outside influence.

The US has sanctioned several individuals in the Venz. Govt because of their abuse of power and abuse of the populace but there have been zero sanctions on Venz.

In fact the US is Venz.'s biggest trading partner for exports & imports.

..."Venezuela has experienced a similar political shock thanks to depressed oil prices. When prices were high, President Hugo Chávez took revenues from the state-owned oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A., and used them to build housing and provide other benefits for the country’s poor and working classes, winning vast popular support for his United Socialist Party. He also sought regional support by offering oil subsidies to friendly countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, and Bolivia. After he died in March 2013, his chosen successor, Nicolas Maduro, sought to perpetuate this strategy, but oil didn’t cooperate and, not surprisingly, public support for him and for Chávez’s party began to collapse. On December 6th, the center-right opposition swept to electoral victory, taking a majority of the seats in the National Assembly. It now seeks to dismantle Chávez’s “Bolivarian Revolution,” though Maduro’s supporters have pledged firm resistance to any such moves."

Due to government interference in the economy.
Over printing Bolivars (their currency) causing rampant inflation.
Setting up multi level exchange rates making dollars hard to get to buy imports.
Seizing foreign and local assets drying up foreign investment and driving off oil field know how causing oil production to fall.
Failing to diversify their economy while they still had the money to do so.
Wasting 100 billion dollars on vote buying give away's while ignoring crucial infrastructure, resulting in more falling oil production and daily blackouts.
Setting price controls during rapid inflation resulting in driving away goods. (nobody can sell under cost for long)
Subsiding gas prices at a ridiculously low level, resulting in rampant black market cross border selling.
Ignoring the spiraling murder rate, the capital Caracas is now the murder capital of the world with a rate over 100 per 100,000 per year. (the US rate is under 5)

All self inflicted wounds.

Someone posted a link to a Telesur article showing support for Maduro's fiasco.

The first person quoted was none other than former left-wing dictator now right-wing dictator Daniel Ortega.

It's almost inevitable, a right-wing strongman will grab power, and put in policies like Strassner and Pinochet were so fond of.

Venezuelan president removes chief prosecutor, a leading critic, from office

By Mariana Zuniga and Anthony Faiola August 5 at 12:02 PM

BREAKING NEWS, 11:43 a.m.: Venezuela’s chief prosecutor, a vocal critic of the president, has been removed from office in a crackdown on dissent. A new governing body of President Nicolás Maduro, stripped Luisa Ortega of her title and replaced her with a government loyalist.

CARACAS — Government forces surrounded the offices of Venezuela’s independent chief prosecutor early Saturday as signs grew that President Nicolás Maduro was moving fast to consolidate authoritarian rule and squelch dissent following the installation of what critics call a puppet congress.

In a telephone interview with The Washington Post, chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega, who broke with Maduro last March, said she was not inside the building but was en route to her office, where government forces had sequestered her staff.

“I can inform you that my office has been taken by public security forces, including national guards and policemen, between 400 and 500” troops, she said. “We still don’t know how many of our employees are inside. They’re not permitting us to go in, or anyone to go out.”
