Illinois governor vetoes bill to raise the state's minimum wage to $15

Source: CNN

The governor of Illinois has vetoed a bill that would have raised the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2022.

Bruce Rauner, a Republican, said in a veto message sent to the legislature that he considers the hike too severe.

"Mainstream economic theory and mainstream economic evidence strongly suggest that an increase in the minimum wage of this magnitude will hurt the very individuals it seeks to help," Rauner said.

The decision has incensed members of the Fight for $15 movement, which have started to share messages on social media labeled #VetoRauner. He's up for reelection in 2018.

a minimum wage at all. He thinks employers should be allowed to pay as little as they please.

I know Democratic office holders who have tried to reason with him on this issue.

who ran for office claiming he would only serve one term, then return to civilian life. Now he is running for re election! He buys whatever his family wants, so what does he care about regular people? His daughter wanted to attend a prestigious high school, but could not make the grade. Daddy Bwuce went to the school, cash in hand and bought a sports stadium for them. Lo and behold, his daughter was suddenly smart enough to be admitted to the school. I hope he gets thoroughly swamped in the next election. One term should be enough to show the voters what the REAL Rauner is like.

5. So the minimum wage workers will labor on for the princely sum of $8.25 / hour.

Earning a whopping $330.00 / 40-hr week, they will really be able to purchase a lot of consumer goods to keep the economic engine running, like maybe a pair of plastic shoes. They can then take their $17,160.00 / year and buy a new toy car or a lego house.

This sort of stupid, shortsighted thinking hurts everyone.

There wouldn't need to be such a big jump had we just increased the minimum wage by a few cents every year to keep up with cost of living increases.

Worked by myself in 88 and grew the business, hired first two employee's in 1989. Starting wage was 6.00 per hour--at least 2.00 over MW back then. If a worker proved in four weeks they would work, learn the equipment,do a good job, show up on time I would raise them to 7.00 per hour.

In 2017 money that's $14.03 per hour. I could do it AND profit yet these Republicans will claim a HUGE burden on Pizza Hut and McDonalds franchise holders and Wally World would have to triple their prices blah, blah, blah.

Yeah right.................
