Updated 7:26 pm, Monday, August 28, 2017

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — Police officers swarmed a public library in downtown Clovis on Monday after getting reports of a shooting inside.

New Mexico State Police Officer Carl Christiansen could not immediately say whether there were any fatalities or injuries but said officers with the Clovis Police Department responded around 4 p.m. to reports of an active shooter inside the downtown building.

City officials were expected to hold a briefing Monday evening.

The Eastern New Mexico News reported that ambulances were dispatched to the scene and at least one victim was taken to Clovis Municipal Airport for transport to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas.

GSW (gunshot wound) victims in northern Virginia are sent by helicopter to DC General, aka Medstar. It is the closest trauma center that can handle that level of injury. Note the recent shooting at the baseball stadium in Alexandria, Virginia. Alexandria has a hospital, Inova Alexandria, but the helicopter landed on the field to transport Scalise to Medstar.

I see their blue and yellow helicopter all the time.

than a Lifeguard flight over the mountains to Albuquerque, the other Level I trauma center.

Distances out west are a hell of a lot longer and things like terrain and weather conditions need to be considered. There were storms here in central NM at the time and it would have been a very rough ride. Otherwise, it's a tossup.

ETA: 2 women dead, 2 women injured, 2 men injured. 3 airlifted out of Clovis. Shooter gave up as soon as he saw the cops. Listening to the police chief.

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) -- Two people were killed and four others injured when gunfire erupted inside a public library on Monday, throwing an eastern New Mexico community into a panic as officers swarmed the building with their guns drawn.

Authorities and elected officials in the city of Clovis said the shooter had been taken into custody and was being questioned, but there was no indication of what may have prompted the violence.

Three of the injured victims were taken to a hospital across the state line in Lubbock, Texas, Clovis City Manager Tom Phelps told The Eastern New Mexico News. He did not know the extent of their injuries.

One woman could be seen being helped into an ambulance while the call for air ambulances could be heard over police radio traffic.

The picture wasn't clear enough to tell, really. If it is, there have probably been some serious mental issues everybody knew about but still let him have access to the family guns.

Police declined to name the suspect, but said there was only one and he was handcuffed as police led him away from the scene soon after they arrived. Friends identified the teenager photographed in police custody as Nathaniel Jouett, a sophomore at Clovis High School.

Family and friends said Krissie Carter and Wanda Walters, both library employees, were killed.

Two men and two women were injured. Three of the injured were flown to hospitals out of town, officials said.

The extent of their injuries was not released.
