GSW (gunshot wound) victims in northern Virginia are sent by helicopter to DC General, aka Medstar. It is the closest trauma center that can handle that level of injury. Note the recent shooting at the baseball stadium in Alexandria, Virginia. Alexandria has a hospital, Inova Alexandria, but the helicopter landed on the field to transport Scalise to Medstar.
I see their blue and yellow helicopter all the time.

Distances out west are a hell of a lot longer and things like terrain and weather conditions need to be considered. There were storms here in central NM at the time and it would have been a very rough ride. Otherwise, it's a tossup.
ETA: 2 women dead, 2 women injured, 2 men injured. 3 airlifted out of Clovis. Shooter gave up as soon as he saw the cops. Listening to the police chief.

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) -- Two people were killed and four others injured when gunfire erupted inside a public library on Monday, throwing an eastern New Mexico community into a panic as officers swarmed the building with their guns drawn.
Authorities and elected officials in the city of Clovis said the shooter had been taken into custody and was being questioned, but there was no indication of what may have prompted the violence.
Three of the injured victims were taken to a hospital across the state line in Lubbock, Texas, Clovis City Manager Tom Phelps told The Eastern New Mexico News. He did not know the extent of their injuries.
One woman could be seen being helped into an ambulance while the call for air ambulances could be heard over police radio traffic.
