Cruz: 'We have a crisis on the ground' in Texas

Source: The Hill

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 08/30/17 10:37 AM EDT

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) said Wednesday that he is focused on saving lives in his home state, describing conditions in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey as “a crisis on the ground.”

“We have a crisis on the ground of people who are hurting right now,” Cruz told “Fox & Friends.” “People who are in harm's way, whose lives and families are in jeopardy as we speak.”

Cruz said he has been working to coordinate relief efforts in Houston and is focused on “saving the lives that are being threatened.”

“I think we can fully expect that Congress will step up in a serious way to meet what is going to be an enormous need,” Cruz added, noting it will be a “long process” to rebuild after the storm.

Totally different person now that it's his constituents who are so badly hurting. He's a despicable semi-human, like most in his party, doesn't really give a damn about anything unless it affects him personally.

Edited to correct grammar.

One is pure snark. "It's because of NYC's bad zoning and regulation requirements, and the people should be relocated instead of rebuilding in an area the next storm will destroy again."

It's snarky because it's inappropriate in NYC as it is for most of Houston. I heard some such comments in the case of Sandy, but considered them retrograde and embarrassing to be uttered by a member of the same species. Life's not zero risk, and in this case they blamed the victims who didn't build the housing up to the codes required for withstanding Sandy unscathed.

The second is that the emergency aid and NFIP funding should have been passed quickly and without much ado in the case of Sandy, and be passed quickly and without much ado in the case of Harvey. Compassion first.

GOP trickle-down economics !!!!!! After years and years, u end up Main Highways being constructed in flood plains with no funds for correction. Plus the GOP Oligarchs get develop and sell homes built on swamp land.

Geez whizz,,, who would have ever thought a storm in Gulf of Mexico would wash it all away. but it was looking good for the 15 years of drought!

Good thing most Americans recognize republican "values" as twisted and degenerate, and instead embrace American values - like honesty, charity, respect for differences, and forgiveness for Texas Senators who turned their backs on the other parts of the nation when they were in need.

Support Texas. Condemn republican ChristoHypocrites.

16. Houston's an older city.

It's expanded far outside its original borders, mostly for tax revenue purposes. There's not much land to develop. The best you'd get are regulations that would require that flooded areas rebuild up to costlier standards. Most of those areas are poorer and often browner, and the impact would be wildly disproportionate if not subsidized heavily by the city (which has no money) or county (which has its own problems).

The result without subsidies would be to break up not just historically ethnic neighborhoods but to displace a lot of Houston's Af-Am and Latino population. Not sure that wealthier strata would be interested in moving there. That would result in a Detroit-like depopulation.

It's a tough problem. The current plan is to simply improve underground drainage, since most flood events aren't caused by bayous' coming out of their banks, with a nod to widening bayous to prevent overtopping there. The total bill will be very large, but that doesn't mean incremental progress is inherently evil.

Nothing short of tragic, really. You could look at it a lot of different ways but one conclusion is the pure profit motive didn't produce good outcomes here. And with this President/Congress the potential for a repeat seems pretty high.

“I think we can fully expect that Congress will step up in a serious way to meet what is going to be an enormous need.” - Ted "The Texas Ayatollah" Cruz.

Sure. And I hope they do what you wanted done in 2005 and Hurricane Sandy: Take the cost "...from entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare". Your words, sir.

Any of his constituents who voted this prick into office and is now "a taker" who takes "government welfare", aka, "hurricane assistance" has to give up their Social Security and Medicare until it is paid back.

Can you imagine the howling from the Reich if they have to live under the actual policies they endorse????
