GOP lawmaker: Deficit a 'great talking point' when Dems have power, different with GOP in charge

Source: The Hill

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 09/28/17 09:21 AM EDT

The chairman of the powerful Republican Study Committee on Thursday admitted that deficit reduction has taken a back seat on the list of GOP concerns now that the party controls the House, Senate, and White House.

Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.) told the New York Times that deficit reduction is a more popular "talking point" when Republicans are in the minority in Washington. “It’s a great talking point when you have an administration that’s Democrat-led,” Walker said. “It’s a little different now that Republicans have both houses and the administration.”

Last year, Republicans pointed to the deficit as the most challenging issue Trump would face in office. But since January, those concerns have largely disappeared. “I can’t think of a more challenging issue that will face this next president,” said then-Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.), now Trump's Director of National Intelligence. “And yet in this presidential election year, this is not even being debated. This is not an issue that’s being presented to the American people in any way.”

“There’s been less talk about it this year with a Republican-led administration than there has been the last seven or eight years,” Walker said Thursday.

... it's almost like there's no deficit at all.

That's how it looks according to the new tax bill the GOP proposed.

We knew this all along that repuke deficit hawks are only deficit hawks when Democrats are in power, but suddenly advocate spending like drunken sailors when repunks are in charge, leaving average Americans holding the empty bag.

I asked him that I guess the deficit is not a problem now that an r is president.

He responded that trump is going to fix the democrat mess we are in.

No point in trying to talk to any trump supporter or "conservative" trump supporter.

no point.

Republicans have never addressed that "problem", as far as I know.

Republicans expected a short 6-week war in Iraq, then sell Iraq's oil to pay for the US costs of war & occupation.
When that didn't happen, they shoveled out bundles of US dollars to Iraqis, Americans, and anyone who was around at the time with hands out.

The costs continue to this day, and into the long-range future, both in Iraq and here at home, and wounded and traumatized need care for the balance of their lives.

And Republicans have the temerity to point a finger at Democrats?
I don't even want to hear it.
