Special Report: HP Enterprise let Russia scrutinize cyberdefense system used by Pentagon

Source: REUTERS

WASHINGTON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Hewlett Packard Enterprise allowed a Russian defense agency to review the inner workings of cyber defense software used by the Pentagon to guard its computer networks, according to Russian regulatory records and interviews with people with direct knowledge of the issue.

The HPE system, called ArcSight, serves as a cybersecurity nerve center for much of the U.S. military, alerting analysts when it detects that computer systems may have come under attack (Graphic: tmsnrt.rs/2yHK3VS). ArcSight is also widely used in the private sector.

The Russian review of ArcSight’s source code, the closely guarded internal instructions of the software, was part of HPE’s effort to win the certification required to sell the product to Russia’s public sector, according to the regulatory records seen by Reuters and confirmed by a company spokeswoman.

Six former U.S. intelligence officials, as well as former ArcSight employees and independent security experts, said the source code review could help Moscow discover weaknesses in the software, potentially helping attackers to blind the U.S. military to a cyber attack.

1. Privatization. Contractors. Bad for the government.

Goes without saying that if the govt had hired its employees to do this, they wouldn't have tried to sell the software in Russia.

18. Has nothing to do with capitalism, it has to do

with corruption from politicians who award contracts to companies for exchange of finance money.

Stop blaming capitalism for all the wrongs perpetrated by corrupt politicians. Those so called "socialist" regimes are just a rhetoric to hide the inner workings of a very evil regime, I dare you to name one "socialist" regime that has lived up to its rhetoric, and please don't use the Scandinavian countries, they are capitalists, but with "Democratic-Socialist" politics. Socialist rhetoric are all facades for a communist regime that ultimately ends up oppressing their people for gain of the few, and yes, it is similar with the problems the USA is having with inequality, but at least the USA does not have suppression of voices, yes the politicians try it, but for the most part it doesn't work.

How good is the USA system in protecting its democracy we shall see when all the Trump theatre plays out to its final act, but to blame capitalism for everything bad that happens is biased ignorance. Blame it on the politicians, they would do the same evil deeds regardless of the ideology of the regime.

29. It has everything to do with capitalism those Scandinavian countries you put up as examples

CONTROL their capitalism. The demand for profit makes a company do anything to use cheaper items in their productions which would not be bad expect so much has been done that damages and sometimes kills people for the sake of making it cheaper. Apparently, you do prosper from capitalism you seem so willing to defend it.

11. Of course it's treason.

HP is a corporation. The supreme court says corporations are people. People commit treason. HP has committed treason, and so have its employees. But nothing will be done about it. Treason is extremely popular right now.

Do you think Reuters is reporting the whole story about our military's vulnerabilities or architecture for preventing penetration?

Brass wouldn't let this go down if it hurt the Pentagon.

Do I err on the side of trusting JCOS and Pentagon work? Yes, I do.

27. I'm afraid of becoming complacent

That this is the new normal, as we each have only so much outrage to express. We are barely given time to recuperate before we are hit with another, often two or three at a time.

It doesn't feel like it is subsiding either, more like it is accelerating. I want to be aware and informed, but it is so much absorb and remain relatively sane.

Lenin

(There's apparently no evidence that he actually said this, but it's a great and perceptive line, no matter who originated it.)
