Gabriel Fernandez led a short and agonizing life. The child was brutally tortured for months by his mother and her boyfriend because they thought he was gay.

Fernandez’s mother and her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, were charged with murder in the case and after a weeks-long trial full of shocking and heartbreaking testimony, Aguirre has been convicted of first degree murder.

Four social workers who “investigated” allegations of abuse but didn’t remove him from the home have been charged with child abuse and other charges.

Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami broke down in tears at a press conference following the verdict. He told reporters he was a father and also the victim of child abuse when he was younger.

Gabriel Fernandez's teenager brother and sister testified in court on Wednesday
They described how Isauro Aguirre picked on the eight-year-old and beat him
Gabriel was made to sleep in a cubby handcuffed and was forced to eat cat feces
He once was made to eat his own vomit off the table and he was burned with cigarettes, they said.
Their mother Pearl Fernandez was complicit and beat him on occasion, they said
She asked them to lie to social workers and say Gabriel was injured when he was playing with them
Gabriel died in May 2013 after being rendered brain dead by one of the beatings
Aguirre, 37, is currently standing trial for his murder in Los Angeles
He admits beating and torturing the boy but says his death was not intentional
Fernandez will be tried at a later date once her boyfriend's case is over
