ACLU demands Portland drop ordinance banning drag shows

Amy Nixon, USA TODAY NETWORK-Tennessee Published 3:51 p.m. CT Nov. 15, 2017 Updated 3:53 p.m. CT Nov. 15, 2017

The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee sent a letter to Portland officials today demanding that the city drop a second ordinance that effectively bans drag shows or risk litigation.

On Nov. 5, Portland's Board of Mayor and Alderman killed a controversial ordinance (1) to add "adult cabaret" to adult-oriented businesses, and has instead turned its attention to regulating sexually-oriented businesses.

The board had its first reading of ordinance No. 17-75, which would add a new chapter to Portland's municipal code to add regulations for sexually-oriented businesses.

ACLU-TN sent the letter (2) on behalf of Elite Productions and Envy Restaurant Bar & Grill.
....

The next Portland board of aldermen meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20.

We hope this TN board of aldermen realizes that just because they may not like a particular kind of speech does not mean that they can shut it down.

We just told the City of Portland, TN that their #drag show ban 2.0 still violates the #FirstAmendment – and we won’t stand for it: http://bit.ly/2zGP9od #FreeSpeech

Basically, everyone else's entire private life is public business - unless you're Roy Moore.
