Iran votes to declare Jerusalem the 'capital of Palestine'

Source: The Hill

BY OLIVIA BEAVERS - 12/27/17 02:16 PM EST

Iran declared Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine on Wednesday following a parliamentary vote, according to reports.

Iran's announcement to recognize the holy city as “the everlasting capital of Palestine,” comes in direct response to President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel earlier this month, Times of Israel reported, citing state-run media.

“It comes in response to the recent U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in hopes of dealing a blow to Muslims,” said Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, who called the timing of the bill "important, the Turkish Anadolu news agency reported.

The bill reportedly passed easily, facing no opposition in a 207-0 vote out of a 290-member Majlis.

Now, most of the Arab world will follow suit and we'll have an even bigger mess on our hands. I didn't think anyone would be stupid or corrupt enough to intentionally add more fuel the Arab-Israeli conflict. The First Assholes of Israel and America have different ideas.

....just to fuck with Trump a little more, I think other nations should start recognizing a US city other than DC as the US capital. I'd love to see France recognize Fresno or Spokane as the capital of the US.

Which is friggin' awesome ... driving down Huntington Blvd, you feel kinda like you've been transported into a Rockwell painting (my cousin owned a home there for years, but sadly, had to sell recently).

And the much of 'the rest' ... one might fairly describe as something akin to 'the Armpit of California'.

I think San Francisco would probably provide the most FU's to the Trumpists ... followed by ... I dunno ... Hollywood?

Israel's capital's been in Jerusalem since before 1950. Even under Jordanian occupation and annexation of the West Bank and Old City, even when Jordan declared Jerusalem to be its second capital, the Knesset and prime minister's residence was in west Jerusalem.

What you think would be outrageous for the US or apparently for any actual country is SOP when it comes to Israel.

Ramallah contains the PA's legislature, long since defunct, and the PA leader's quarters, even though he's long since been out of office ... Not mostly because of Israeli problems, but because of internecine squabbles.

It would mean that all of the other big problems between the two would have been solved already.

There was no statement of a single, unified Jerusalem. Since the Israeli capital's been there long before the '67 War, there's nothing preventing the Palestinians from having their capital in the eastern or northern fringes of the urban center that is Jerusalem. Except that's not the important part, that's not the part that rally's public opinion around them in much of the world, and if they actually moved to the part of Jerusalem they could move to (like Israel did) they'd lose a crucial talking point that didn't matter until '67 when that part of Jerusalem stopped being Jordanian territory.

Then they'd be sharing Jerusalem even now.

how about everybody uses all of it? other countries save $$ by having one embassy for both Israel and Palestine, Israelis can share their infrastructure with Palestinians and vice-versa, maybe teach the world a lesson in how humans with very different priorities can live together peacefully. instead of being the center for a hotbed of regional hostility, Jerusalem could become a center of peace -- maybe even the next home for the UN if NYC becomes problematic. i think there's potential here for humans to demonstrate maturity befitting our 10000-year-old civilization; it's not like having talking points that fuel hostility has really been a good time for anyone besides weapons dealers and religious extremists.

Trump might just have united the shia and sunni muslims... against us.

All that would have to happen now is some sort of truce in the shadow war between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
