Ann Romney: No More Tax Returns Will Be Released
Source: Huffington Post
In an interview with NBC set to air Thursday, Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, said her husband's campaign will not release any additional tax returns to the public ahead of the election.
"We have been very transparent to what's legally required of us," Romney told reporter Natalie Morales, according to excerpts from NBC News. "There's going to be no more tax releases given."
Defying a longstanding trend among presidential candidates, the Romney campaign has only released a single -- and likely incomplete -- tax return. Politicians and pundits from both sides of the aisle have been pressuring Romney for weeks to disclose more of his tax history, culminating with a claim from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) two weeks ago that he'd heard from an early investor in Bain Capital that Romney didnt pay any taxes for a decade. Romney has denied that claim.
Ann Romney said that releasing more details on the family's taxes would merely give the Obama campaign "more ammunition." The Romneys' wealth is rumored to be as much as $250 million, and since much of Mitt Romney's earnings come from investments, he would pay a lower effective tax rate than many lesser-off Americans. But as for whether the campaign is trying to withhold embarrassing information, Ann Romney told NBC "there's nothing we're hiding."

What is almost certainly in them is such a ridiculously low or zero tax rate on massive earnings... probably technically legally but using incredibly weaselly tax loopholes and accounting tricks that most Americans don't realize the rich get to take advantage of... that it will OBLITERATE the entire GOP "boo hoo the rich get taxed too much to create jobs" narrative and wake people up to the inequality in the tax code.
Ignorance of that fact is the only thing Romney has. THAT is what is damaging about the returns. They'll educate people about how badly they're getting screwed.

this is hardly the best financial strategy, but it is a simple example of how it can be done, perfectly legally.
and arguably, it's not a terribly immoral thing to do, either, if it actually does result in better roads and schools.
that said, the more lucrative strategies rmoney is in include stuffing as much as possible into "retirement" accounts, which simply avoids taxes for personal gain. to the extent that retirement accounts permit people to not lean on the government in their senior years, this tax break makes sense, but rmoney's $100mm is obviously well beyond that point. there's no social benefit in exchange for depriving the government of his fair share of taxes.
additionally, paying small amounts in taxes or fees to lawyers and other jurisdictions, such as the caymans or bermuda or ireland or luxembourg, in order to escape taxation here, is similarly dodgy.
rmoney's moral compass centers around gaming the system to his own personal advantage, damn the social consequences.

It is quite obvious that the Romney's have something to hide. We don't know exactly what it is, but we have a pretty good idea. And if they didn't have anything to hide, they would simply release the returns and be done with this issue.
But I know countless idiots who are defending Romney's decision NOT to release his returns. And these same countless idiots pay taxes throught the nose. Most that I'm referring are likely in the same tax bracket as I am.
Why does it not bother them that the rich pay no taxes, while they, themselves, pay a big portion of their wages to the IRS? Because I guarantee you that it bothers the hell outta me that Romney (and others) gets away with this!

He is filthy rich, so why didn't he start paying a high rate and stop using loopholes to avoid taxes in 2007? he should be able to release 2007-2011 and show a good 20-35% rate. Any adviser to him should have been telling him this years ago. If he didn't pay a higher rate (and we know he didn't from what little he has released) then it is pure greed. The fact that we won't release previous years, tells me that he paid an even lower rate.It just seems like a dumb amateur move that they could have avoided.

Ann's looks is not one of them.

(135,425 posts)Her face looks like that because she's pissed off, believes she's special and entitled, she's being challenged on her horseshit, and she's LYING.
That "MS" card is about played out.
I don't see "Nasty-assed, shit-on-lip, sneer" as a consequence of the condition in any of the medical dictionaries.
Please.

(70,581 posts)I am very sorry for your friend but the disease doesn't always
show the same symptoms in all people.
MADem
(135,425 posts)That isn't tightness around her chin--it's pursing of her pissed-off lips. Not the same "look" in the slightest.
The example you are showing me is nothing like that TSK TSK "shit on lip" expression Ann rMoney is displaying.
No cigar. That look on her face has EVERYTHING to do with be called out, and nothing to do with MS.
Botany
(70,581 posts)Plenty of stuff to be upset w/ the Romneys about but the side effects of
MS is not one of them even if what we are seeing might not be because of
her disease. The fact is neither you or I is in any position to judge why Ann's
face looks like it does and it is classless to say anything about how somebody's
face looks who has a chronic and terminal neuromuscular problem.
MADem
(135,425 posts)I'm talking about that shitty look around her MOUTH. That "Don't ask me any questions, you inferior being" look, made all the more noticeable because she didn't get her restalyne fillers to plump up the not-so-fine lines.
Ann Romney had "experimental" chemotherapy for her MS over a decade ago and she has been in full remission ever since. She got that treatment well before it was available to the schmucks, who even now still can't always get it.
See--here she is, happy as a clam. No one is asking her about tax returns in this photo. Sheesh.

(22,899 posts)It would appear this interview with "the empress" is supposed to silence the doubters, but what it's done is akin to throwing kerosene on a glowing bed of embers (as others in this thread have mentioned). An astonishingly inept move, even for them!! But yet another gift to razor-sharp Team Obama!!

(37,457 posts)Ann Romney has MS, so we are all supposed to be kind and gentle to her no matter her role in the campaign. I'm sorry, but when a spouse (even with a devastating chronic illness) becomes part of the campaign, she's liable to get attacked also.
Romney's a cowardly fool who puts his sick wife out there to take the heat, instead of doing it himself. I have no respect for the man.

(15,139 posts)sentence. But he never resorted to sending the missus out to make excuses for him or explain away his fuck ups. Romney is pathetic and Ann is allowing herself to be used. If she had any sense, she'd kick him in the ass and encourage him to grow a pair.

(24,411 posts)Oh the hubris of the Romneys. It's staggering.
Republicans have repeatedly called on Romney to release those returns. It's not just Democrats. The man
cannot effectively speak about most issues, without releasing those returns. How can he talk about fiscal
responsibility, budgets or TAXES--without everyone thinking, "Uhhh, yeah, where are your tax returns?"
Every presidential candidate in recent history has released several years of tax returns. This was never
an issue, never a fight. They just did it. What makes the fricking Romneys so special that they can dictate
to the country--what they will and will not release?
President Obama had to release his birth certificate, which no President has EVER done--but Mitt Romney won't release several years of taxes, which EVERY recent Presidential candidate HAS done? Lovely.
A Presidential campaign is a job interview. Would you arrive at a job interview and refuse to release your resume?
How in the hell did they think they could get away with this?
And one last thing--who in the world is running their PR--The Three Stooges? Why in the hell -- from a strategy viewpoint -- would Ann Romney bring up this topic? She just stirred up the pot and helped the Democrats re-invigorate a damaging controversy that hurts her husband. Let's all tune in to hear if she mentions Mitt's criticism of the London Olympics. Maybe she'll laud the glories of the state-run healthcare system in her state!
I've NEVER, EVER experienced people who are both so off-the-charts ridiculously stupid and arrogant. It's a rare combo of extreme negatives. They're like cartoons!
I look forward to this Thursday interview, and the post-dust up created by Ann opening her giant pie hole.

(2,682 posts)When I was working in the legal department of an engineering company, we applied for a license to do business in the City of New York because we were going to work on a project there. The questions asked by NY were extensive and intrusive. They wanted to know everything about each corporate officer including what other boards they served on or offices held in other corporations. Not only our main corporation but all the officers and directors of our subsidiaries. For example, our corporate president had to disclose his position on the board at his kid's elementary school eight years before!! Previous addresses for 10 years, stocks owned, law suits, even down to traffic tickets and the disposition of the charges! And financial statements for the corporations for 10 years. When our attorney asked the city's attorney why such detail the answer was "we want to make sure you aren't mobbed up".
My point: If the City of New York required sufficient details to be sure our mid-sized engineering firm wasn't dishonest, don't we, as voters, have a similar right to sufficient information to determine the honesty of the person running for the Presidency of the United States and therefore leader of the free world? He's not running for the board of an elementary school.
MITT (and Queen Anne) RELEASE THE TAX RETURNS, DISPEL THE IDEA THAT YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING DISHONEST OR IMMORAL.

It's beyond arrogant to withhold tax returns in this day and age, and it's worse that Ann Romney's claiming transparency. Cue The Princess Bride quote on using a word incorrectly.
