Trump Waffles on Border: We Don't Need a 2,000 Mile Wall

Earlier today, White House Director of Strategic Communications Mercedes Schlapp told Brianna Keilar that, instead of an actual wall, the president is looking to build something called a “border wall system.” Now, Trump himself has weighed in, questioning the need for his long-beloved pet project.
The president has been meeting with members of both houses in order to try to come to some kind of bipartisan consensus on DACA and immigration reform in general. During this meeting, in which he expressed hope that immigration reform would become “a bill of love,” Trump dropped what may be something of a bombshell to his more hardline supporters.
“We don’t need a 2,000 mile wall,” he said. “We don’t need a wall where you have rivers and mountains and everything else protecting it, but we need a wall for a, uh, fairly good portion.”
Trump went on to laud a 2006 attempt to build a “substantial fence,” once again alluding to the rivers that would make building an actual wall so difficult, calling them “violent.” This tracks with what he told reporters aboard Air Force One last year, in which he called the rivers along our southern border “vicious.”
