OSLO (Reuters) - Many Norwegians rejected on Friday a suggestion by U.S. President Donald Trump that they would be more welcome to move to the United States than immigrants from “shithole countries” such as Haiti or African nations.

The Nordic country, one of the richest in the world by GDP per capita, was last year named the happiest nation on the planet and is known for a cradle-to-grave welfare state funded in part by large reserves of oil and natural gas.

“On behalf of Norway: Thanks, but no thanks,” tweeted Torbjoern Saetre, a politician representing Norway’s Conservative Party in a municipality near Oslo. Others condemned the U.S. president’s comments as inappropriate or racist. “We are not coming. Cheers from Norway,” one woman wrote.

While hundreds of thousands of Norwegians emigrated to the U.S. in the 19th century, just 502 out of a population of 5.3 million people moved there in 2016, down 59 from the previous year, according to Statistics Norway.

And at the rate the Trump administration is screwing things up, it's well on its way to becoming one. My ancestors immigrated to the U.S. from Norway in the mid-19th century and I'm beginning to wish they'd stayed there.

from Norway. It is indeed the wealthiest country per capita, not just because of the reserves of oil and natural gas, but primarily because it created an "endowment" to ensure that when those reserves run out, Norway can continue to care for future populations in the same manner as today. Smart politicians over there, folks. And why on earth would any Norwegian want to cross the pond?

Here, only the oil companies benefit from our oil. I heard that New Orleans would be one of the wealthiest cities on earth if profits from off shore drilling off LA were shared proportionally.
