Foreign governments, candidates, trade groups spent at Trump properties: report
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sixty-four trade groups, foreign governments, Republican candidates and others stayed at or held events at properties linked to U.S. President Donald Trump during Trumps first year in office, a political watchdog group said in a report released on Tuesday.
The arrangements represented unprecedented conflicts of interest because Trump oversees the federal government and has not divested from properties he owns or that carry his name, Public Citizen, a nonpartisan group, said in the report.
Shortly before taking office last year, Trump said he would hand off control of his global business empire to his sons Donald Jr. and Eric, and move his assets into a trust to help ensure that he would not consciously take actions as president that would benefit him personally.
Many government and private ethics watchdogs said the president should have gone farther, divesting assets that could cause a conflict of interest.

(9,426 posts)The rules are bent for them, with plenty of help from DC. A democratic president doing any of this would have at the very least, been censured. The crooks in the gop help cover for this slimeball. I hope they all go down with him.

(51,591 posts)many weren't hard, real rules but implied rules that any president is expected to follow out of respect for the position and country. Everyone thought for 250 years that a person of character would be the only type of person chosen for such an honorable position. No one imagined that someone who is void of any character or respect for the country and govt would ever be elected let alone supported by citizens and Congress.

(22,651 posts)To much respect for rules and laws isn't a good thing either. IMO that's what makes most elected Ds spineless, afraid to really push back vs this attack against our democracy.
Perhaps there is a Senator, a Congressman who will push back enough to risk their seat/career for country & 'the people'. Time is running out though.
Republican party, (along with their foreign gov friends) are very good at hiding stuff, get "rid" of troublesome people & running out the clock.
These days they probably won't pull a Putin & outright kill them but they're very good at ruining people.
