Steve Bannon: Former Trump aide strikes deal to avoid grand jury appearance in Russia probe
Source: Yahoo News
Clark Mindock, The IndependentJanuary 17, 2018
Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has struck a deal to speak with special counsel Robert Mueller and his team investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.
Mr Bannon, who was recently disavowed by President Donald Trump, will discuss his time with the Trump campaign and White House directly with the investigators, and will bypass questioning in front of a grand jury.
Mr Mueller's team had secured a subpoena to compel Mr Bannon to testify, which could have forced him to speak with the grand jury.
FBI agents reportedly showed up at Mr Bannon's home in Washington, DC last week with the subpoena, only to find out that the former White House employee had secured the legal representation of William Burck hours earlier, according to reports.

(3,911 posts)I would imagine that the deal included the stipulation that if he isn't forthcoming with what he knows, then he can tell it to the grand jury.

(42,307 posts)Bannon is going to roll on Jr, Kushie, the Dotard. There would be no reason for a deal otherwise.

(26,290 posts)Why do I say that? Because we have no real way of knowing what Bannon knows thus its to early to say if anything he says to Mueller will go anywhere just yet.
Even if it does lead to Sr the problem is still the Repugnants in Congress only with their support can he be removed and knowing the types of games they play I would not be surprised if they did a big political theater event where they rig it so it comes down to only needing one or two more Repugnants to vote to remove him from office and they will not get those final votes.
They will then play the whole "Oh look at how we tried, sorry folks" and then they will go back to the business of working behind the scenes to enlist the aid of hostile governments to win more elections.

(26,290 posts)that will not get us anywhere near the number of votes we would need to remove him and bar the Repugnants from playing their usual games.
Best we can hope for is to get a good candidate that can kick his ass to the curb in 2020.

(26,290 posts)we simply will not be able to win enough seats there to remove him on our own.
Best we can hope for is to retake the majority to blunt him.

I'm expecting he'll have enough to help Mueller nail Javanka.

(32,634 posts)The lawyer who represents Bannon also has McGahn and Priebus. They're all going to rat out the kiddies and that will be their defense. Of course the kiddies are going to point fingers at the 3 big ol' bad guys too. Whether anybody will actually give up Cheeto remains to be seen. From what I've seen and read on DU, only Kushner and Junior could actually give up Papa, and I don't believe either would do that.
This will be an interesting next few months.

(31,167 posts)So you have a good point -- he can lie or hide info from the Mueller team because he won't be under oath. As posted upthread he can always be be questioned by the Grand Jury later. Also as posted upthread, believe the Mueller team knows exactly what they are doing.

(3,515 posts)He wants a lawyer sitting next to him.
This is just a step toward getting him alone in the room with the grand jury. If he insists on executive privilege, it will probably go to a court. This is stalling for time.
Mueller probably already has enough on Trump and the Trump family with regard to money laundering.
I don't trust Bannon for one minute. He despises law and order. He despises the rule of law, thinks it is all some kind of conspiracy. He will do everything he can to throw a wrench into the system. Because he hates system itself.

(3,245 posts)I don't believe he had an "official" Administration position. It's not like he was Chief of Staff or White House Counsel. Those are "official" White House positions.
And it's not like he's "Communications Director" ?
He's more Karl Rove than anything else.

(4,787 posts)..here's most of their very brief article. (The article on Yahoo doesn't appear to say where the info came from.)
Steve Bannon has struck a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller's team and will be interviewed by prosecutors instead of testifying before the grand jury, two people familiar with the process told CNN. He is expected to cooperate with the special counsel, the sources said.
The sources did not say when the interview will take place or if the subpoena would be withdrawn....
...
CNN's Jim Acosta, Dana Bash, Jeremy Herb, and Manu Raju contributed to this report.
