UPDATED: Trump pushes Senate to vote on 20-week abortion ban

Source: The Hill

BY JESSIE HELLMANN - 01/19/18 12:53 PM EST

President Trump on Friday called on the Senate to pass a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks.

"I call upon the Senate to pass this important law and send it to my desk for signing," Trump said in his address to the March for Life, an annual march against abortion in Washington, D.C. Trump spoke to attendees from the White House Rose Garden via live satellite video.

The 20-week abortion bill passed the House last year but has not been called for a vote in the Senate, where it's unlikely to pass because of a slim Republican majority.

Trump touted the various anti-abortion policies his administration has enacted, including action the Health and Human Services department took Friday rescinding Obama-era guidance aimed at preventing states from defunding Planned Parenthood.

Trump decries 'permissive' U.S. abortion laws at rally

Ian Simpson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump criticized U.S. abortion laws as among the most permissive in the world in a speech to anti-abortion activists at the annual March for Life on Friday, and pledged his administration would always defend “the right to life.”

The Republican president’s speech, relayed via video link from the White House Rose Garden to thousands gathered on Washington’s National Mall, highlighted his shift in recent years from a supporter of women’s access to abortion to a powerful opponent.

“As you all know, Roe v. Wade has resulted in some of the most permissive abortion laws anywhere in the world,” he said, criticizing the 1973 Supreme Court decision that affirmed a woman’s right to an abortion at most stages of a pregnancy.

Trump said the United States “is one of only seven countries to allow elective late-term abortions,” mentioning China and North Korea. “It is wrong. It has to change.”

We can only guess how many he's financed since he has no doubt paid hush money to keep them secret.

Is to get as many white babies born as possible! The leaders of some of these anti-abortion groups are more concerned with the white population of the US becoming a minority, then anything else!

Now if in the process, women of color end up dying, for those groups, that's a winning strategy!!!

I think they want to end public education along with forcing women to have unwanted babies so they have a poor, desperate workforce of near slaves who will accept any working conditions because there is no better choice and when they get sick or injured they just die. Of course letting women die is part of it, but not the real goal, IMO

Is it less "murder" at 19 weeks than 20 weeks? Or, is it that women with at risk pregnancies can't get an actual diagnosis of their fetus' health conditions until after 20 weeks?

Roe V Wade says women have the right to abortion up to viability. 20 weeks is pre-viability even under the best of circumstances.

Unwanted pregnancies are almost always taken care of before 20 weeks. This proposed bill is just a way for the religious right to force women to have sick and diseased babies, that they would have dearly wanted had the fetus been given a healthy diagnosis, and their own health wasn't also at risk.
