Senate Dems take deal, clearing way to end shutdown

Source: The Hill

Senate Democrats say they are accepting a deal with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for an immigration vote, clearing the way for passage of a bill to reopen the federal government.

McConnell early Monday promised to take up an immigration bill that would protect an estimated 800,000 Dreamers from deportation, under an open amendment process, if Democrats would agree to end the government shutdown.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) said that pledge was enough for his caucus to accept a three-week government funding bill, which is now set to pass at noon.

"After several discussions, offers, and counteroffers, the Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement. We will vote today to reopen the government to continue negotiating a global agreement," Schumer said.

I'm guessing what they gave up is that the Senate can pass something, but the dems will be powerless to force the issue in the House or with Trump. This was their chance to say "No DACA, No Budget". Of course, we can rinse and repeat this again in February when they have to come up with something again.

the more benefit for Democrats in November.

Any heat is off Democrats now from the Right, we're cooperating, negotiating, in the long tradition of the Senate,
give and take.

The best the Right can do with this is fume about the popular DACA legislation. It plays to their base. Period.

Continuing the shutdown hurts people.

Democrats have:

Brought Dreamers and CHIP much public attention.

Forced McConnell to openly promise to legislate about the Dreamers.

Repugs will add poison pills to the immigration bill, but the process has been brought to public attention. Attaching poison pills will be clearly visible for all to see.

A three-week government funding bill will bring more attention to funding in a small amount of time. Democrats can apply pressure then if needed. And repugs do not like the funding of government being so prominently displayed.

with odious terms we can not agree and be in a possibly even stronger position as the time runs out and the repugs will again be shown incompetent in their ability to govern.

Another shutdown will put us in an even stronger position.

shutdown will show even more that the repugs can't govern.

McConnell knows that. He also knows that he needs 60 votes not 50 with Pence coming in to save his bacon by breaking the tie.

We also got 6 more years of CHIP with this short term deal so that bargaining chip is taken away from the repugs.

We got 'em by the short hairs.

and add sweeteners to the bill to get him to sign (if there is a deal we Dems agree to) because he knows if another shutdown happens the repugs will take the heat, plus he also knows he'll be staring at not just a blue wave but a blue tsunami if the gov shuts down again.
