Trump nominates new ethics office director

Source: The Hill

President Trump on Wednesday nominated a new director for the federal government's ethics office, several months after the previous director resigned over frustration with the administration.

Trump nominated Emory Rounds, a current associate counsel at the Office of Government Ethics, to head the independent agency, the White House announced in a statement.

The nomination follows the July 2017 resignation of Walter Shaub, who left over concerns of possible conflicts of interest for Trump and has since become a vocal critic of the president.

Rounds, who was a lawyer for 22 years with the Navy, previously served as an ethics counsel for the White House for six years during the George W. Bush administration and as an ethics counselor for the Commerce Department, according to the White House.

Found this story thanks to Richard Painter's tweet about it. He thinks Rounds is an excellent choice:

Although, running ethics department in the Bush administration is kind of an oxymoron.

Sure it might be a sensible pick but if the Madman has no intention of listening to that person it’s really intended to be pointless.

I mean, you think Trump is really going to use John Huntsman to talk to the Russians when he essentially has a direct line to them and he can literally spill state secrets to them in the White House?

To Trump, ethics are ceremonial.

I think the over under betting line for how long he serves before he is fired for violating the DOTUS standards of ethics would be 90 days.
