WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday pledged the Justice Department would work to vigorously enforce federal gun and violent-crime laws and preventively identify potential mass shooters, as the country reeled from a Florida school shooting that killed 17 people.
"It cannot be denied that something dangerous and unhealthy is happening and we are, once again, watching the images of our children terrified streaming from their school with their hands above their heads," the top U.S. law enforcement officer told a meeting of sheriffs. "We are going to take action. We must reverse these trends."

wonder if they have any programs aimed at those who are about to go batsh*t violent?

(11,586 posts)We also mustn't forget that the NRA has been pushing to make gun ownership an American identity. Many now have bought into, both ideologically and physically (by buying and brandishing guns). This will be the hardest part to confront because it is now a deeply rooted cultural phenomenon.
While it does seem to appeal to the right-wing the most, many on the left own guns as well.
It seems crazy when you look at how many own guns in this country and then when you look at their lifestyles. The number of actual outdoorsmen is small.
BumRushDaShow
(129,030 posts)And the laws that need to be created for enforcement are being blocked by the current Congress, so any "enforcing" that Beauregard fantasizes needs to happen, is meaningless.

(24,703 posts)Here are the other Republican senators who voted against the measures, and the amounts of money they have received from gun rights groups throughout their careers. Note that these are only direct contributions: the gun lobby spends millions of dollars in outside spending, or advertising and other efforts which cannot be legally coordinated directly with campaign committees.

(11,519 posts)The damned second amendment has been so badly mutilated over time it's going to take a gargantuan effort to fix this problem. It's obvious that existing laws can't address the problem of too many people having access to deadly weapons who shouldn't have them nor have any reason to have them.
What keeps eating at me is why are the words "well regulated militia" included in the second amendment? There can be no answer other than the second amendment was intended to allow members of a "well regulated militia" to own firearms. (I'm sure I can get away with bringing this up now without being flamed, the NRA trolls typically take a few days off after every massacre to let everything get back to the status quo).
