In response to Florida shooting, Trump calls suspect ‘mentally disturbed,’ does not mention gun control

By David Nakamura February 15 at 11:44 AM

President Trump on Thursday called the suspect in the mass school shooting in Parkland, Fla., “mentally disturbed” and vowed to help local jurisdictions tackle mental health issues, but he made no mention of stricter gun control laws.

In a televised address at the White House, Trump focused his response on the need for the nation to offer more support for young people who feel isolated a day after Nikolas Cruz, 19, a former student who had been expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, was accused of the rampage that killed 17 people at his former school.

“I want you to know you are never alone and never will be,” Trump said during brief remarks in the Diplomatic Room. He urged young people to turn for help to “a teacher, a family member, a local police officer or a faith leader.”

“Answer hate with love,” he said. “Answer cruelty with kindness.”

shooters may have underlying mental health problems, that is not the fkn ELEPHANT in the room. The issue is there are too many guns in America and there needs to be legislation for sensible gun ownership.

Automatic Assault weapons should only be available to law enforcement and the military. They need to be banned for the general public.

Fully automatic weapons were registered in the 1930's, and new ones effectively banned in 1986. All existing legal fully automatic weapons are old, command collectors prices, require a full background check with fingerprints, registration, and a $200 tax stamp. You can count the number used in the commission of a crime on one hand.

I suggest the registry for NFA weapons be re-opened, and extended to include semi-autos. (The weapon used in Florida was a semi-auto.)

The registry was extremely effective at combatting straw purchases, unlawful transfers, gets rid of the 'gun show loophole' however you might define that issue, and raises the 'bar to entry' to people who can pass a full background check.

It's a good start.

got my point. Any weapons that put bullets out in extremely rapid succession (like I heard during the frightening cell phone videos) needs to be banned.

I think we could get a LOT of mileage out of treating them like we treat fully automatic weapons. As you note, there's little practical difference between an AR-15, and it's burst/full auto capable sibling; the M-16.

Maybe in the long term, someday, the conversation will change and a ban become feasible. Currently we could get a LOT of harm reduction simply by registering and controlling them like NFA weapons of old. It worked then, it could help now. (The registry was in response to things like Bonnie and Clyde using BAR's (Browning automatic rifles) against armored cars and such for criminal enterprise.)

The NRA actually helped craft and pass the NFA legislation that did the work. Not saying they would today, but there's precedent that could be used against their objections to new legislation, and perhaps silence them.

He didn't write the speech. There's no way he could sit for that length of time and compose a speech. He has people who can scour the internet for uplifting phrases and weave them into a speech that sounds good while saying nothing.

All he has to do is stick to the script. Today, he did that.

Was it about Muslims or Mexicans or whatever that the buffoon-in-chief said we need to know what's going on with them?

Frankly, we need to know what's going on with all these white guys shooting up school children.

Of course, we know what's going on. Legislators are bought and paid for. The NRA is a front for Russian money laundering. White supremacists and gun humpers (but I repeat myself) have a friend in the WH. And it seems that domestic terrorism by these white guys is just dandy with the WH and half the white people in the US.

24. Feb 2017 - 45* Signs Bill Revoking Obama-Era Gun Checks for People With Mental Illnesses

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-signs-bill-revoking-obama-era-gun-checks-people-mental-n727221

Feb 28, 2017. President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.

The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.

Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.

President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.
