Devos: Congress 'Has To Lead' The Response To Shootings, 'It's Their Job'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Nicole Lafond | February 15, 2018 2:41 pm

After criticizing the “finger pointing” that takes place after mass shootings like the attack at a Florida high school Wednesday, Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos urged Congress to take the “lead” on enacting changes that could stop gun massacres in the U.S. “It’s their job,” she claimed.

“We’ve seen, you know, lots of finger pointing back and forth,” she said during an interview with conservative radio personality Hugh Hewitt. “But we need to have a conversation at the level where lawmakers can actually impact the future, because going back and putting myself in the seat of one of those families impacted, you know, one of these shootings is one too many. And we have got to have an honest conversation and Congress has to lead on this. It’s their job.”

DeVos also said that there have been “far too many” of these “situations” before, and reiterated her opinion that it was Congress’s responsibility to curtail school shootings.

“Congress needs to be holding hearings on these issues. And we’ve seen lots of discussion about this every time we’ve had another incident,” she said. DeVos’s call for congressional action echoed statements earlier Thursday by another member of the administration, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who also suggested Congress should take action to address mass shootings without specifying what form that action should take.

If Eric can't rule Afghanistan let his private army patrol the corridors of our nation's schools at Blackwater's prices.

armed teachers, private guards in schools from companies like Blackwater.. or some combination of these. What the fuck is next...concealed carry permits for third graders?

In other words, everything but what might actually help: eliminating or severely restricting access to high-capacity magazines for weapons capable of extremely rapid fire.

I say this, by the way, as the owner of a shotgun specifically intended for home defense. If I ever have to use a gun to defend my family or myself at home, it will mean that my security system (alarm and good deadbolt locks) has already failed and/or I have somehow fucked up in setting up said security system. If this happens I sure as hell am not going to need a fucking THIRTY ROUND MAG to defend myself or my family. There is NO LEGITIMATE NEED FOR THIS SHIT unless you're military and in a war zone, or law enforcement, and the latter only in special cases.

She won't even let the buck get near the WH... excuses for Trump.

Why is Trump 'allowing' violence done to our students?

When Trump accepted the GOP nomination:

"I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end," he said. "Beginning on January 20th, 2017, safety will be restored."

While it is true that Congress debates and writes legislation. It is also the job of the President, as chief executive, to provide leadership and guidance on critical legislation. To lay out an agenda for Congress to work on and craft bills the President can sign into law.

Missing in DeVos' comments is the function of the POTUS. Trump and all of his boot-lickers work overtime to dodge responsibility and work. Everything that is wrong is Congress' fault, everything that is good is obviously their doing... or so the White House says daily.

14. Congress needs to be holding hearings on these issues"

They HAVE been "holding hearings on these issues" ever since Raygun and Brady were shot in 1981. And the first go-around, it took Brady 13 years to get some kind of legislation passed (and it happened under a Democratic President), but that legislation had a sunset provision and was allowed to expire after 10 years under Shrub.

And so tens of thousands of gun killings later, with not only MORE hearings, but actual CHILDREN traveling to D.C. to lobby for some common sense regulation after 20 1st & 2nd graders were gunned down, and what happens? NOTHING. NRA bought-and-paid-for Congress blocked it all and continues to do so.
