From the section Athletics
Sir Roger Bannister, the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, has died at the age of 88.
His time of three minutes 59.4 seconds, set at Iffley Road sports ground in Oxford on 6 May 1954, stood as a record for just 46 days but his place in athletics history was assured.
Bannister also won gold over the same distance at the 1954 Commonwealth Games and later became a leading neurologist.
He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2011.

(23,339 posts)He's in wonderful shape.
The timed run, of course, will be on a closed course, with Trump supplying the stopwatch, Kellyanne Conway will time the run, and the press will not be invited.
And, Sarah Sanders will announce the results.
He's the greatest of all time.

(4,305 posts)Was he the subject of that movie, "Chariots of Fire," about the runners?
Danmel
(4,914 posts)Chariots of Fire is a 1981 British historical drama film. It tells the fact-based story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice

(4,305 posts)Anyway, runners like Roger Bannister and the subjects of that movie are wonderful. They really do seem to have a burning energy inside them.

I have a signed poster of Eamonn Coghlan (Irish 5K champ and Olympian) when I went to the Boston Marathon with my ex. Eamonn was a great flirt. Also have a signed pic of Joan Benoit from the same expo. She was shy, wandering around looking lost.
