Democrats, women candidates score big in Texas primaries

Source: Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Women running for Congress surged to big wins and Democrats smashed recent turnout levels in Texas’ first-in-the-nation 2018 primary elections, giving Republicans a potential glimpse of what’s ahead in the first midterms under President Donald Trump.

Energized and angry Democrats in Texas, where the GOP has dominated for decades, came out in force to surpass 1 million voters Tuesday — the first time the party has eclipsed that benchmark in a midterm primary since 2002, just months after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Equally striking was the showing by women on the ballot: Of the nearly 50 women running for Congress in Texas, more than half won their primaries outright or advanced to runoffs. What’s more, at least three of those runoffs in May will feature women going head-to-head, including a key race for Democrats in their bid to take control of the U.S. House this fall.

“It’s Trump. It’s Trump,” said Veronica Escobar, who won her Democratic primary and is now poised to become one of the first Hispanic women to represent Texas in Congress.

Repubs will definitely be pulling their voter suppression crap in November, not to mention potential "problems" with the vote count, so we'll need to absolutely obliterate them with voter turnout.

we have always had more folks on our side. That is why repubs do all they can to suppress the vote and kick folks off the rolls. We all need to focus on November 2018.

Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. They seem to think they are threatened.

They've also been conditioned for at least 30 years to be afraid like this.

Generally, those fears are made up by Republicans as a stick to drive people to the polls. but this year they should be really scared. Texas is going purple, maybe not in 2018, but it is going to happen. Latinx people are only increasing in number in Texas and whites aren't. Its a matter of time.

But given how pissed off people are about Trump, this could be the year Texas flips.

And it really shouldn't flip, but Trump is so extraordinary, he's put many deep red districts in play. Were it any other Republican from the 2016 primary, we would not be having this discussion.

republicans and their idiotic policies on killing the American people. They already proven themselves to be inhuman, and don't care about the rest of us, being that they passed a tax cut only for the 17% of the richest Americans (in effect, they got 83% of the tax cut benefits), while we were left holding the bag (or more truthfully, the bill to pay for all of these tax cuts).

That's disappointing. I hope we improve it in November.

However, I did hear someone say that those numbers include only the 15 most populous counties in TX.
