UPDATED: North Korean leader has invited Trump to a meeting, U.S. officials say

Source: The Washington Post

By Washington Post Staff March 8 at 7:06 PM

North Koreas Kim Jong Un has asked President Trump for talks, an invitation delivered by South Koreas national security adviser, according to U.S. officials.

After a year in which North Korea fired intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching all of the United States and tested what is widely thought to have been a hydrogen bomb, any break in the tensions between the two countries would likely be welcomed around the world. There has never been a face-to-face meeting, or even a phone call, between the sitting leaders of the two countries.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

UPDATE:

By Anna Fifield March 8 at 7:20 PM

TOKYO North Koreas belligerent leader, Kim Jong Un, has asked President Trump for talks and Trump has agreed to meet him by May, South Koreas national security adviser said at the White House Thursday after delivering the invitation to the American president.

Kim has also committed to stopping nuclear and missile testing, even during joint military drills in South Korea next month, Chung Eui-yong told reporters in Washington.

After a year in which North Korea fired inter-continental ballistic missiles capable of reaching all of the United States and tested what is widely thought to have been a hydrogen bomb, such a moratorium would be welcomed by the U.S. and the world.

Kim Jong Un expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible, Chung said. President Trump said he would meet Kim Jong Un by May. Chung did not provide any information on where the meeting would be. In Seoul, the presidential Blue House clarified that the meeting would occur by the end of May.

Chung led the South Korean delegation to North Korea earlier this week, where he had a cordial four-hour dinner with the reclusive Kim. During the meetings in Pyongyang, Kim and his senior cadres expressed a willingness to hold talks with the U.S. and was prepared to discuss denuclearization and normalizing relations.

During the meetings, Kim made it clear that it would not resume provocations while engaged in those talks, Chung said Tuesday upon returning to Seoul.

Chung and Suh Hoon, the head of South Koreas intelligence agency who was also at the dinner in Pyongyang, arrived in Washington Thursday to brief Trump and his senior officials on the meetings.

Playing to His Orangeness’s need to feel important by doing something no other president has done is just the formula. His Orangeness is doing nothing to protect America while making nice with Kim and French kissing Putin. They are going to do something ugly to this country. Anyone who falls for this sucker play deserves what they get.

if trump doesn't cozy up to the N. Korea leader. Next will come Trump removing sanctions against North Korea.

I think Putin's whole deal is destruction of democracy and the American way of life. Our long time allies are becoming our enemies and our long time enemies are becoming our friends.

Nothing trump ever does makes sense unless you factor Putin into the equation.

That is part of it.. My understanding is he also very much wants to separate us from NATO, thus greatly weakening NATO and making it much easier for him to move on Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Poland?...

He also is making some of the same attempts in other Western European countries-- including the UK, France, Germany, Turkey, Austria.. um....

I am sure trump believes that this is all Kim's idea, stupid fuck that he is.

ON THE OTHER HAND--- Moon Jae-in has been in touch with Kim, so this COULD be all his doing, trying to bring about somthing positive. He is no dope like.. you know who.

PS: To be clear -- we need to talk to North Korea. But Kim is not inviting Trump so that he can surrender North Korea's weapons. Kim is inviting Trump to demonstrate that his investment in nuclear and missile capabilities has forced the United States to treat him as an equal.

Thu Mar 8, 2018, 09:46 PM
Mar 2018

Putin announced his intention that an attack against any Russian ally would be considered an attack upon Russia and retaliation would ensue.
North Korea is an ally and important outlet for Russian energy resources
North Korea now no longer needs it's own nuclear deterrent, because it is now under the umbrella of Russia.
Kim Jong Un now has the high ground to appear the peacemaker and is open to talks, without bankrupting his country in a futile arms race he cannot win.
Trump sees an opportunity to claim a diplomatic "win" rushing in to tout his tough guy diplomacy as the winner.
Sanctions against North Korea are lifted and sanctions against Russia remain unenforced.
Talks between North and South Koreacontinue with the ultimate result being withdrawal of U. S. forces and reunification.....sketchy here

winner: North Korea.......enter the Russian safety net and direct resources to rebuild country
winner utin......the real dealmaker globally
winner: Trump....claim to be a dealmaker, but actually gains nothing
loser: Japan

wildcard: China
