Student gunman dies after Maryland school shooting; two other students injured
Source: Washington Post
Two students were critically injured and a gunman died in a shooting at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland Tuesday morning as classes began, according to the Saint Marys County Sheriffs Office.
The gunman who was a student at the school 70 miles south of Washington, D.C. opened fire in a hallway shortly before classes began around 8 a.m., striking a female and male student, said Sheriff Timothy K. Cameron.
Students and staff quickly notified an armed school resource officer, who pursued the shooter and fired a single shot at him, Cameron said at a press conference around 11:30 a.m. The shooter fired back.
The shooter and the two students were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition. The shooter, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at 10:41 a.m., Cameron said.

Mr. LaPierre you can shove it. You are terrorist and a bully.

GREAT MILLS, Md. -- A student who opened fire at a Maryland high school died Tuesday morning, the police said. The campus was on lockdown as deputies and federal agents converged on the crime scene at Great Mills High School.
St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said a student shot two other students in a hallway before classes began Tuesday morning.
A school resource officer then faced off with the shooter, the sheriff said. Each fired one shot simultaneously. Cameron said the gunman later died from his wounds. He said that the investigation would determine whether the round the officer fired hit the shooter.
Cameron said it's possible the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but investigators will review surveillance video and determine what happened.

(19,236 posts)If neither of the two students in critical condition die, they can conveniently forget about them and state that a good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun from committing murder.

(19,236 posts)Two students were critically wounded before the good guy intervened. Yes, it could have been worse, but that doesn't negate the fact that this is a piss poor way to respond to school shootings.
Armed security is a reactive, not proactive, defense that rarely engages before shots are fired. And once shots are fired, people are already dead or injured.
Two wounded by gunnan, then gunmam confronted by deputy, deputy and student fired simultaneously, they don't now yet if the deputy's shot killed him or it was self inflicted.
They don't know for sure if the gunman was going to shot more students as he's dead.
News report 1hour ago.
This is how we lose arguments by splitting hairs where obviously having the armed deputy there stopped somebody shooting on school ground.
Political propaganda from both sides of the argument will try and spin it, the fact remains that the gunman when confronted by deputy stopped shooting, no longer had access to shoot other students, and either shot at the deputy and was shot by deputy or shot himself when confronted by deputy..the take away is pretty obvious that a deputy stopped a shooter
Seriously

Better to teach our children healthy emotional reactions to stress and disappointment, especially in relationships.
