House passes $1.3 trillion spending bill, boosting defense, undercutting Trump’s wall; Senate vote before shutdown deadline unclear

The vote came less than 48 hours before a Friday midnight deadline for a government shutdown. The Senate still must act on the massive package and it was unclear if the chamber would vote by Friday night.

All eyes were on Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) who tweeted Thursday morning, “Shame, shame. A pox on both Houses – and parties. $1.3 trillion. Busts budget caps. 2200 pages, with just hours to try to read it.”

The bill gives Republicans a major win by delivering a $78 billion increase in military spending over 2017 levels, while Democrats won a $52 billion increase for domestic programs.

The bill includes $1.6 billion in funding for construction of a border wall, but that number is far short of the $25 billion in long-term funding that Trump wanted.
